What's happening in our classrooms?
Literacy:
Students wrote short Fable texts following the appropriate structure and marked their writing on a self assessment rubric. They were excited to share their fables with the Prep students. Students continued to learn about figurative language and how this is used to describe something in a creative or imaginative way. They learnt to identify similes, metaphors and personifications in short texts read. Students also learnt the root words 'duct', 'flect' and 'press'. Students are also beginning to wrap up their Book Club book work for this term.
Challenge- How many words can you make using the root words by adding the following prefixes and suffixes?
Numeracy:
This week students began our unit on Financial Planning. In pairs, students enjoyed budgeting and planning a mock birthday party with $100 spending money. They learnt the importance of researching, budgeting and calculating total costs. They discussed with their partner the difference between wants and needs and many found out that their "wants" were too expensive and had to compromise on their budget. Students then solved worded money problems and learnt how to calculate GST on items.
Inquiry:
Students have been busy finishing their inquiry projects on Earth and Space. We are excited to see students presentations in the coming weeks. We have had some interesting and exciting topics chosen to explore and students have chosen a variety of ways to present their learning. During Inquiry sessions, students took time and care creating their amazing Art Show Project pieces. We cant wait for you to see them next term at the Skye P.S Art Show!
Wellbeing:
The Zones of Regulation continue to be a focus in our classrooms. Students are regularly exposed to identifying the zones they are in throughout the day and strategies they can use to ensure they are in the optimal zone for learning. During Wellbeing sessions, we discussed positive coping strategies to use when faced with difficult situations.
Celebration of Learning:
Here are some of the grade 5's working on their Inquiry projects
House Gymnastics
Well done to all our Year 5 students for enthusiastically participating in our house gymnastics competition last Friday!
Book Week - Buddy Activity
Last Wednesday the 23rd of August, Year 5 students visited the prep patch for a 'Book Week' buddy activity. We read 'The Gruffalo' together before working on a shared art project. Once again our Year 5's were excellent role models for the younger students, showing outstanding patience and kindness.
Have a great week!
