ABC Education Writing Competition

In Term 1, our Year 5 and 6 Newman Writing students had the opportunity to enter ABC Education’s inaugural News in My Neighbourhood writing competition. In this competition, school students (Foundation to Year 12) from across Australia were invited to create and produce creative media responses to a series of news and information challenges. Students were asked about what matters to them—the ideas, topics, activities and experiences that are important to them and their communities. The Term 1 Challenge was to write about: “Something fun that you’ve done lately? Tell us about your favourite events or activities by writing 100 words.”

We are very proud to congratulate Julian G in Year 5, who was announced as the Winner of the Primary section, and Isabella A in Year 6, who was named Runner-up. The students will receive a certificate and were acknowledged on ABC Education’s website, where Julian’s work was also published. Both students also took part in a phone interview to talk about their interest in news and storytelling. Their responses were used to help create content featured on ABC Education’s social media platforms and newsletter. We’re very excited and proud of Julian and Isabella, and once again congratulate them on their success and achievement.

Below, we are delighted to share the written compositions that earned Julian and Isabella this recognition. We hope you enjoy reading their thoughtful and engaging responses as much as we did!

                                                               The Pool by Isabella A

Splish! Splash! The cold water surrounds my body as I jump in and bump the bottom of the pool slightly. Excited, the energy pumping through my body lets me cut through the water, swimming to the deepest part of the pool. My mum throws the sinkys and I plummet to the bottom of the pool, picking one up then going to the surface of the water to catch my breath. The Australian heat mixes well with the temperature of the pool, cooling me down. My parents sit under the shade as my siblings and I enjoy the moment.

Football's Greatest Comeback by Julian G

The air feels like the Sahara Desert, my breath evaporates into the neverending sky. My teammate’s leg swiftly slices the air. Bang! Goal!! Two all! My heart is leaping with excitement and my legs are urging to explode! What a comeback! “Come on boys we can win”. My head slowly turns like a sloth to the clock, TEN SECONDS left. Shoot! The ball carves and whizzes through the strong current. Ping! It hits the crossbar. Five, four, three, in an instant the ball ends up at my feet. My leg reacts spontaneously. Goal! Full time 3-2. CHAMPIONS!
