Grade 3 and 4

Healthy Harold
It was that time of year again when Harold came to visit ACPS.
The Year 3/4 students participated in a Life Ed session focused on friendship and understanding feelings. They explored ways to broaden and develop their emotional literacy through engaging discussions and activities. The session also emphasised identifying and practising assertive communication skills, as well as emotional regulation techniques like mindfulness. Harold the Giraffe was a big hit with the students and made a special appearance at assembly, much to everyone's excitement.
English and Numeracy
'THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN' What a beautiful story. The Grade 3 and 4 students embraced reading our class novel, The One and Only Ivan. This had themes around friendship, hardship, resilience and opportunity. It tells the remarkable true story of Ivan, a gorilla kept in captivity at a shopping mall. This heartwarming tale explores friendship, freedom, and the power of hope, reminding readers of the beauty of compassion and the importance of standing up for what is right. We discussed and shared our connections and were able to make comparisons between the book and the film. We all highly recommend this beautiful story.
The Grade 4's have been learning about Angles and where they are found in the environment, identifying acute, obtuse and right angles and then how to measure them. Some students have worked out that there are 360 degrees in a circle and that if you put 4 right angles together that adds up to 360 (4 x 90 = 360).
The Grade 3's are about to start working on time and being able to tell the time on an analogue clock. This is a great "time" to get them to tell you the time at home. If they can tell the time accurately, get them to convert the time to 24 hr time and solve problems about elapsed time. Elapsed time is when we ask questions like my cake will take 45 minutes to cook. If I put it in the oven at 5:20, what time will I it be ready. Another challenge is getting them to look at timetables. We are going to the footy and the game starts at 3:30, what time do we need to catch the train from our station to get there in time.
