Foundation (Prep)

English
We have introduced the new letters, Gary Gecko /g/, Lou Lou Ladybug /l/ and Kelly Kitten /k/. Students continue to review the letters we have learnt so far (m, s, t, a, p, i, f, r, d, c, o, h, e and n) and practise word building (peg, lip, nest, flag, etc). We have continued to extend our focus to words with 3 and 4 sounds. The children have also been introduced to capital letters and full stops. Each week we learn more high frequency words to assist them with reading and writing simple sentences.
Maths
We have covered a range of concepts over the past fortnight. We have practised naming the days of the week and thinking about which days come before and after a given day. The children could identify the days of the school week and the types of activities we do on each day. We discussed the terms, yesterday, today and tomorrow. The students also thought about the different times of the day they know, e.g, dawn, morning, afternoon, evening and night.
We returned to a measuring topic and revised what we knew about measuring the length of an object. Students were introduced to balance pans and explored weighing items to determine which was heavier and lighter. We also had fun with egg timers to measure how many actions we could do in one minute. Students focused on an action in the school playground and worked with a partner to time the number of actions.
The Resilience Project
The students had fun making gratitude glasses with Mrs Misra. The children made their own glasses and then thought about what they were thankful for when they looked through their glasses, with a lens of gratitude. Everyone made an entry in their Student Wellbeing Journals to record their thoughts.
Many students in Prep C have also been enjoying spending time with Hannah, our student welling being officer, in the Wellness Room. The students enjoy some quiet arts and craft time with others who enjoy similar activities, alongside an adult who is available to help guide positive social interactions.
Life Education
Last week Prep C attended a Life Education session called My Body Matters. The interactive session was designed to help students identify personal responsibility for an active and healthy lifestyle by understanding what a healthy body needs. The children identified important healthy choices such as brushing their teeth, eating healthy foods and doing exercise to help keep their body fit. The session was an engaging way to reinforce important messages as we encourage the children to take on more tasks of personal responsibility.
We enjoyed the range of group activities, watching the short videos of Harold and his friends and of course the highlight was meeting Harold the giraffe himself.
I hope the students can take some time to rest over this weekend as we head into the final weeks of term.
