Year 5 Update

š° Year 5 Newsletter ā Term 2, Week 8
Hello Year 5 families!
Weāve had a busy and exciting couple of weeks of learning across all areas of the curriculum. Hereās a snapshot of what weāve been up to:
āļø English ā Persuasive Writing & Debates
This week in English, weāve been learning how to persuade others using strong arguments and persuasive language. We explored root words to help us understand new vocabulary and wrote persuasive pieces on topics like:
- āAnimals should not be kept in zoosā
- āSchool uniforms should be optionalā
- āKids under 12 should not have smartphonesā
We also worked in teams to plan and prepare for debates, using rebuttal sentence starters like:
- āThat might be true, butā¦ā
- āAnother point of view isā¦ā
Itās been great to see everyone building confidence in sharing their opinions respectfully!
ā Mathematics ā Area & Perimeter
In Maths, weāve been exploring area and perimeter of 2D shapes. We learned how to:
- Measure the inside of a shape (area)
- Measure the outside of a shape (perimeter)
- Use formulas and strategies to solve real-world problems
Some of our fun activities included designing zoo enclosures, creating dream houses for gnomes, and building robots using compound shapes. We even started learning about volume and how to calculate it using length Ć width Ć depth.
š§ SEL ā Puberty and Emotional Changes
In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), weāve been learning about pubertyāthe physical and emotional changes that happen as we grow. Weāve had respectful and thoughtful discussions about how our bodies and feelings change, and how to support ourselves and others during this time.
