📰 Year 5 Newsletter – Term 2, Week 8

Hello Year 5 families!

We’ve had a busy and exciting couple of weeks of learning across all areas of the curriculum. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to:

✍️ English – Persuasive Writing & Debates

This week in English, we’ve been learning how to persuade others using strong arguments and persuasive language. We explored root words to help us understand new vocabulary and wrote persuasive pieces on topics like:

  • “Animals should not be kept in zoos”
  • “School uniforms should be optional”
  • “Kids under 12 should not have smartphones”

We also worked in teams to plan and prepare for debates, using rebuttal sentence starters like:

  • “That might be true, but…”
  • “Another point of view is…”

It’s been great to see everyone building confidence in sharing their opinions respectfully!

➗ Mathematics – Area & Perimeter

In Maths, we’ve been exploring area and perimeter of 2D shapes. We learned how to:

  • Measure the inside of a shape (area)
  • Measure the outside of a shape (perimeter)
  • Use formulas and strategies to solve real-world problems

Some of our fun activities included designing zoo enclosures, creating dream houses for gnomes, and building robots using compound shapes. We even started learning about volume and how to calculate it using length × width × depth.

🧠 SEL – Puberty and Emotional Changes

In Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), we’ve been learning about puberty—the physical and emotional changes that happen as we grow. We’ve had respectful and thoughtful discussions about how our bodies and feelings change, and how to support ourselves and others during this time.

🌏 Humanities – Our Impact on the Environment

In Inquiry, we’ve been learning about how humans impact the environment—both positively and negatively. We explored topics like:

  • Pollution and climate change
  • Recycling and renewable energy
  • Deforestation and reforestation

We also looked at World Environment Day and researched sustainable initiatives that help protect our planet. Students created posters and shared ideas on how we can all make a difference.

🧥 Reminders

It’s getting chilly outside, but warm inside! Please make sure all clothing is clearly labelled with your child’s name so that any lost items can be returned quickly.
