                    Our Learning - Weeks 8 & 9

English

This week, students focused on improving their persuasive writing by exploring different types of linking words and how they help connect ideas. They revised their own writing to replace overused connectives with stronger options and also began learning about homographs.

In Week 9, students will continue developing their persuasive writing skills by learning how to use personal pronouns, anecdotes, and exaggeration to make their arguments more relatable and convincing. They will also practise writing strong introductions and conclusions, while continuing to build their understanding of homophones and homographs through context clues.

Maths

This week, students completed their multiplication unit by exploring the power of 10 pattern and practising how to break arrays into smaller, solvable parts. This helped them develop and refine their most efficient multiplication strategies.

Next week, we will begin our unit on time. Students will learn to tell time to the nearest hour and minute using both analogue and digital clocks. They will create their own visual clocks, make connections between time and fractions, and practise skip counting by 5s to read the minute hand accurately.

SEL

This week, students practised using the ‘Roads and Roundabout’ problem-solving model to explore different options and consider possible consequences when faced with challenges.

In Week 9, students will explore what makes them similar to and different from others. They will learn that people of any gender can share interests or be different, and that it’s perfectly okay to have unique preferences and perspectives. These lessons support respectful relationships and self-acceptance.

Humanities

This week, students explored the different services provided by local government and how they support the community.

In Week 9, students will apply this understanding by selecting a local government service to include in their council project. They will also create engaging and persuasive promotional materials to encourage community use of their chosen service.

Hillsmeade Heros!!!

Congratulations to the students recognised this fortnight for demonstrating Hillsmeade’s core values of Kindness, Respect, and Resilience. We are proud of your efforts and the positive example you set for others.

Homework

Reading

We strongly encourage students to read every night. Please use their diaries to record their reading and ensure they are signed by a parent or guardian before returning to school.

Maths

We encourage students to regularly practice their times tables at home to build confidence and fluency. This will help them progress through their levels and strengthen their math skills by the end of the year.

Humanities

Students may receive a Humanities homework task to support their learning in class. We encourage families to have these conversations at home to help students deepen their understanding of identity and history.
