Our Learning - Weeks 8 & 9

English

In English, we are beginning to explore the structure and purpose of procedural texts. They are also revisiting their drafted writing pieces as they prepare to edit and publish them for their Writer’s Gift. As part of their writing development, students are learning how to use compound sentences and apply FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) to connect ideas effectively. Alongside writing, we are continuing to build comprehension skills through focused reading tasks.

Maths

In Maths, we are learning to tell the time using both analogue and digital clocks. Students are building their understanding of formal units of time such as seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks. They are learning how a 24-hour day is split into 12 hours of ‘am’ and 12 hours of ‘pm’ and what these terms mean. We are also focusing on the difference between the hour and minute hands on an analogue clock. Students are practising how to read the time to the hour, half hour, quarter hour and minute, and how to record time accurately in both analogue and digital formats.

Inquiry

Our topic this term is Geography.

In Inquiry, we are learning more about our country, Australia. We are each choosing an Australian state or territory to investigate and will be creating a PowerPoint presentation to share our findings. As part of this project, we are learning how to follow a research rubric, gather relevant information and present our ideas clearly and confidently.

Social and Emotional Learning

In SEL, we are learning to use the 'Roads and Roundabouts' problem-solving model to explore different options and understand the possible consequences of our choices. We are also developing our awareness of the unique qualities we each bring to the classroom by recognising our own individuality and appreciating the similarities and differences among our peers.

News and reminders

Drink bottles:

Please remember to bring a drink bottle to school every day. It saves disruption to your child's learning when this is accessible within the room. They are able to fill up their bottles in a nearby classroom.

Homework:

Students are encouraged to complete one or two activities from the homework grid each week for the rest of the term. Once an activity is completed, they just need to cross it off and write the date in the box so teachers can keep track of what’s been done.

Reading continues to be an important part of homework, and we encourage students to read for at least 10 minutes on 3 to 4 nights each week.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher.

Year 3 - Healesville Excursion:

On Friday 1st August, Year 3 students will visit Healesville Sanctuary to participate in the Aboriginal Cultures and Country experience. This program will explore Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, the seven seasons of the Kulin Nation and how seasonal changes affect living things.

Students need to arrive at school by 8:10am for an 8:30am departure, with an expected return at 3:45 pm.

Students are required to:

  • Wear their full school uniform.
  • Bring a water bottle, snack and lunch.
  • Bring either their school bag or a smaller, comfortable bag.

There is a cost for this excursion. Please check Compass for more details.
