Notes from the Principal

National Simultaneous Storytime
It is not often I get to read a picture book aloud to the students these days, so I jumped at the chance to celebrate National Simultaneous Storytime with our students.
Each year, across Australia, we stop at the same time (12pm) and all read the same book. This year the book was "Truck Cat" by Deborah Frenkel. It's a story about cats, humans, immigration and identity, and homes lost and found. It is a story that is accessible for children of all ages - well worth a read as a family.
Just so that everyone is aware – when Mrs Steele reads, what happens in story time, stays in story time ok!
Oval Works and Wannon Water Grant
A huge thank you to the Young family for their generosity in spreading new soil and sewing and fertilising the school oval. We will be putting up chicken netting around the school boundary fence in an attempt to keep as many rabbits out as we can. Jodie also applied on the school's behalf for a grant through Wannon Water for an automated sprinkler system on the oval. Jodie has phoned us this week to advise that she was successful in her application and school will receive funding of $5,000. We will now look into what system to put in. Thank you Jodie and James!
Reconciliation Week
Cavendish Primary School was invited to bring along 3 student leaders to take part in the Hamilton Walk for Reconciliation on Tuesday. I was very proud of Emma, Pippa and Fiona who braved the weather to represent Cavendish at this commemoration. Each school was invited to read a one-line contribution to describe what the Reconciliation Week theme – Bridging Now to Next – meant to them. Pippa confidently read our contribution out to the group:
“To recognise Reconciliation at Cavendish Primary School we acknowledge the past, learn from it and walk together into the future”.
We listened to some fantastic speeches from Gunditjmara elders and Southern Grampians Shire Council representatives, who all spoke about the importance of our young leaders coming through, growing with strength and courage to speak up and speak out against discrimination.
Gymnastics
Our F-2 students loved their gymnastics sessions at the Hamilton Gymnastics Club. They were super excited to try all the different obstacles. Next it is our Years 3-6 students. They will be attending their sessions on Tuesday 10th and 17th June. Thanks to Jon Herrmann for transporting them in. See the F-2 Gymnastics page for some action photos!
School Photos
Frank Monger came on Monday to take our School Photos. The wind was a bit tricky with hair but we were lucky that the rain held off long enough so we could still take them outside.
Working Bee
School is holding a Working Bee this Sunday 1st June. We would love to see as many helpers here as possible. We have set it from 10am to 2pm. If you can help a lot or just a little, it will be very much appreciated.
