Specialist News

Junior School

Students have been working on the fundamental movements skills of balancing, jumping and hopping through a variety of activities and minor games.

Middle & Senior School

Students have been building their knowledge and skills of the athletics field events: shot put, discus, long jump and high jump. This has been done through modified activities that build towards the real events. They have seen the links these events have with some of the more traditional sports they play on weekends. The most pleasing aspect has been the way in which they have adopted safe practices.

The Foundation Students have started discussing emotions now. We've acted out the Very Hungry Caterpillar and read the Colour Monster Story.

The Junior and Middle School have continued on with our Zones of Regulation, with only the red Zone left to discuss. We have spent a lot of time discussing what these emotions feel like in our bodies. If we are able to identify when we are feeling an emotion then we are able to better use our strategies to regulate.

The Senior School have been looking at our reactions to different situations, and when we react in an unexpected way, the effect this can have on learning in the classroom.

Year 6 Excursion

The Year 6 students were invited on an excursion to the Cranbourne Royal Botanical Gardens to discuss Wellbeing and Leadership. They got to explore the gardens while also taking part in some activities led by the staff around looking after their wellbeing.

Foundation

Students have participated in fun and engaging circle activities where they are learning the difference between a speaking voice and a singing voice. They have been enjoying dance and freeze movement activities and explored percussion instruments and the sounds they make. Students completed an 'I SPY' activity where they had to listen to the sounds made by an instrument and colour in the matching picture. This activity caused great debate as the sound of the tambourine and bells make similar sounds!

Old McDonald had a band was the crowd favourite! Students listened to the music and played their instrument when prompted by the song. Sometimes this got very loud!

Junior School

Year 1 and 2 students have been learning to group instruments by the sounds they make. They have been playing, sorting and listening to a variety of percussion instruments and making decisions around whether they make wood, metal, skin or shaker sounds. They were challenged by an aural listening quiz where they had to circle the instrument that makes the secret sound.

Students have been introduced to basic notation and are learning to clap and play  short rhythms on instruments as per below:

Middle School

Students have been learning bucket drumming. They have rehearsed and performed a whole class routine to We Will Rock You and are now learning how to compose their own drum score.

Senior School

Students have been learning the Ukukele. They have learnt to strum (down and up) and focused on the chords C, F, Am and G. G was the most challenging as it requires three fingers to hold the strings.

Most students were suprised how tricky the instrument was to play but they are perservered and have now learnt to play along to simple songs in small groups and as a whole class.

Scientists at work

in Year 1 and 2

When we do a science experiment we need to make sure that we do a few things.

  • We must keep careful record of what we are doing.
  • We must keep everything the same and only change ONE thing about each test.

What do plants need to survive and thrive?

Students in Year 1 & 2 have had a great time watching their plants grow over the last few weeks. They have even been a little surprised about where seeds will grow. Students have discovered that seeds don't actually need dirt to grow but will grow in just water if the conditions are right.

Students from Grade 3-6 have begun looking at some coding and software engineering using the code.org platform. They are learning the basics of the block based language which will help them to code other technology at the school such as the micro:Bits and robots.
