As part of the Year 9 study of Civics and Citizenship, selected students had the wonderful opportunity on Thursday 26 of March to experience the justice and legislative systems in action. This immersive experience included visits to the Supreme Court, District Court, Francis Burt Law Education Centre and Parliament House.

The day began at the Supreme Court, where students actively participated in a guided tour and developed their understanding of key court participants and the roles they play in both criminal and civil cases. Students then visited the District Court, where they observed real court proceedings from the public gallery, gaining valuable insight into how trials operate in practice.

At the Francis Burt Law Education Centre, students took part in a mock trial, where they stepped into various legal roles, such as, the judge, jury, prosecutor, accused/defendant and witness. It was fantastic to see the students confidently and enthusiastically bring their roles to life.

The final stop was Parliament House, where students explored the legislative process. They had the opportunity to sit in both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council, and participated in a simulation of how a bill is debated and passed into law. Students were also very fortunate to meet Mr Ron Sao, Local Member for Cannington, which added a valuable real-world connection to their learning.

The facilitators at each venue commended our students on their outstanding conduct, engagement and curiosity throughout the day. Their thoughtful reflections and discussions highlighted how impactful this hands-on experience was in complementing their classroom learning.

A sincere thank you to Mr Aaron McGoorty for accompanying the excursion and supporting students in making the most of this amazing learning opportunity.

Overall, students had a meaningful experience within the justice and legislative systems that shape our society, while developing key skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and civic understanding.
