A Strong Start to the 2026 Academic Year
Dear Senior School Students and Families,
It has been an incredibly positive and purposeful start to the academic year in our Senior School, and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding efforts of our students and Senior School Team for setting the expectations high.
One of the most pleasing highlights has been our exceptional attendance. Currently, 47% of our senior students have achieved attendance rates of 95% or higher, significantly exceeding the state average of 29%. This is a fantastic achievement and reflects a strong commitment from both students and families to prioritise learning.
We know that attendance is one of the strongest predictors of academic success. Students who attend regularly are more engaged in their learning, better able to keep up with coursework, and more likely to achieve their personal best. Quite simply, being present in class everyday matters—and our students are demonstrating that in an outstanding way.
Monitoring Learning Progress
At Westall Secondary College, we are committed to ensuring that students and families have clear, timely, and meaningful information about academic progress. Our reporting processes are designed to support both the Victorian Curriculum (Years 7–10) and VCE (Years 11–12) programs.
Compass – Real-Time Feedback
Throughout the semester, teachers publish results and feedback for Major Assessment Tasks on Compass. These tasks are significant pieces of assessment that measure student learning and achievement.
By sharing results progressively, students and families can:
Monitor academic progress in real time
Identify strengths and areas for improvement
Take timely action to support learning growth
We strongly encourage all families to regularly check Compass and engage in conversations about learning progress at home.
Progress Reports
Progress Reports are issued during the semester to provide a snapshot of how students are tracking in each subject, with our first cycle of progress reports due to be released at the end of this term.
These reports:
Indicate whether a student is progressing satisfactorily or may be at risk of receiving an ‘N’ (Not Satisfactory)
Include feedback on Learning Behaviours, highlighting the habits and approaches that support effective learning
While Progress Reports are not detailed academic reports, they play a vital role in helping students stay on track and make adjustments where needed.
Looking Ahead
We encourage all families to take the time over the break to:
Review Progress Reports and assessment feedback carefully
Celebrate achievements and recognise effort
Set clear goals with your child to support continued improvement
Early in Term 2, there will also be an excellent opportunity to meet with your child’s teachers to discuss progress, address any concerns, and plan next steps together.
Thank you to our students for the positive way in which you have approached the year so far, and to our families for your continued support. The strong start we are seeing is setting a powerful foundation for a successful 2026.
Kind regards,
Mr Travis McIntosh
