Resilience and Preparedness for Learning

Our fortnightly focus has been Resilience: Attempt all tasks and do my best. At our school, we encourage students to take responsibility for their learning by coming to each lesson prepared with the correct equipment. Being organised may seem like a small thing, but it plays a big role in helping students learn successfully.

When students try their best, they learn more, build confidence, and feel proud of what they achieve. It also helps teachers understand what students know and where they might need extra support.

When children put effort into their work, they develop good learning habits such as concentration, persistence, and responsibility. These habits make it easier for them to tackle more challenging tasks as they grow older. Trying their best also teaches students that mistakes are part of learning and that improvement comes through practice and effort.

How Families Can Help at Home

Parents play an important role in helping children develop a “have a go and do my best” attitude. Here are some simple ways families can support this at home:

Encourage effort, not just results

Praise your child for trying hard, sticking with a task, and showing persistence. Comments like “I’m proud of how hard you tried” help children understand that effort matters more than getting everything perfect.

Create a routine for homework and responsibilities

Having a quiet time and space for homework helps children focus and attempt tasks carefully without feeling rushed.

Allow your child to try things independently

It can be tempting to step in quickly, but giving children time to work things out for themselves helps build confidence and resilience.

Talk about mistakes positively

Remind your child that mistakes are part of learning. When something is tricky, encourage them to try again or think of another way to solve the problem.

Model a positive attitude

Children learn a lot by watching adults. Showing persistence when something is challenging helps them see that doing your best is important for everyone.

By encouraging effort, independence, and a positive attitude toward challenges, parents can help children develop the confidence to attempt all tasks and always try their best.

By working together, we can help students build strong habits that will support their learning both now and in the future.
