Foundation News

It has been wonderful to see how beautifully our Foundation students are settling into school routines. We are also noticing fewer tears each morning. Just to reassure you, once your child walks into the classroom, the tears quickly stop and the happy bounce returns.

We are so proud of how resilient our 'Foundies' are becoming with their morning routines, unpacking their bags, putting items away, and taking out their water bottles independently. Such fantastic habits are already being established!

We have had a few lost uniform items (hats and jumpers), but thankfully they were quickly returned as they were clearly named. Thank you for labelling everything, it makes a big difference.

Students have been demonstrating our school values in the yard by using the playground equipment appropriately and remembering the NLPS Code. During Circle Time, they are learning to take turns and share their thoughts on different topics discussed. They are also doing an amazing job remembering classroom routines, such as:

  • Chairs down on Tuesdays and Thursdays and chairs up on the other days (our Foundies are proudly in charge of this!)
  • Yellow take-home bags out on Mondays to swap take home books, and glue homework in
  • Using stationery responsibly, especially remembering to put lids back on whiteboard markers and glue sticks

We recently held a Foundation meeting with all four classes where we explored and unpacked the Acknowledgement of Country. Students practised saying it together, and we hope they will soon be able to share it confidently with you at home.

Our students are thoroughly enjoying using whiteboards during Literacy and Numeracy sessions. They love 'chinning' their boards to share responses and carefully wiping them clean before the next task. We have also been practising correct pencil grip, 'pinch and flip',  which was lots of fun to learn!

Icy pole day was very exciting as it was our first one! Students enjoyed their treat, responsibly putting their rubbish in the bin, and many commented on how cold it was to hold... a few even suggested they might need gloves next time!

We have introduced 'Gallery Walk', where students place their hands behind their backs and walk around the room to admire each other’s work and offer compliments. It has been a lovely way to celebrate one another’s efforts.

Together, we created our Class Agreement, and students contributed thoughtful and meaningful statements that we will continue to follow and gently remind each other about if needed.

In Health, we discussed things we can do well, things we enjoy, what makes us special, and who we can talk to when we need help. Students are being encouraged to confidently ask for help whenever they feel stuck.

In Numeracy, students have loved learning about repeated patterns. They were completely engaged in creating their own patterns and are now spotting patterns everywhere; in the classroom and even in the yard!

As we are now halfway through Term 1, we kindly ask that if you haven’t already done so, please talk with your child about your family meeting place for home time. We are aiming for Week 9 for our Foundies to be dismissed independently from the classroom, remembering that there will be a teacher on yard duty after school.

If you are running late, please notify the office. Rest assured, your child will never be left unattended. Any students not collected by 3:30pm will be walked to the office by the yard duty teacher.

Thank you again for your ongoing support each day. Let’s continue to celebrate all the wonderful achievements and growth we are seeing in our amazing Foundies!

Year 2 News

On Wednesday 11th February, Year 2s took part in a mindfulness incursion focused on supporting student wellbeing and developing a deeper understanding of how to maintain a healthy body and a healthy mind.

Students explored the Zones of Regulation and learned that everyone experiences a wide range of emotions across all zones. Through discussion and practical activities, students developed an understanding that while all emotions are normal, having strategies to help return to the green zone supports calmness, focus, and readiness to learn.

The session also highlighted everyday habits that promote wellbeing, including eating nutritious food, getting enough sleep, being active through play, and spending quality time with loved ones. These simple but powerful strategies help students build positive routines and strengthen their emotional resilience.

Year 2 staff were very impressed by students’ engagement and thoughtful contributions throughout the session and look forward to continuing to embed these wellbeing practices into everyday classroom learning.

Returning Library Books

Did you know there are three easy ways for your child to return their library books and borrow new ones?

  1. During their scheduled library visit – Students can return their books and choose new ones at this time.
  2. At lunchtime – The library is open for returns and borrowing during lunch breaks.
  3. Via their classroom library book tub – Students can place their library books in their classroom library tub. These are collected every Friday and returned to the library.

We encourage regular returns so students can continue enjoying new books more often! Happy reading!

PE/Sport News

District Swimming Carnival

On Wednesday 18th February, a group of twenty students from Years 3 to 6 jumped on a bus and headed to the Werribee Outdoor Olympic pool to participate in the 2026 District Swimming Carnival.

The students had qualified for the school’s swimming team a couple of weeks earlier during the school’s swimming trials, which took place at the BayFit Leisure Centre in Altona North.

We had many students perform well on the day by winning ribbons, with three qualifying for the next level of competition which will be at the same venue on Thursday 5th March.

Overall, a great day was had by all in attendance. As always, we are proud of our swim team who finished in 5th place in the district. Congratulations to all who were there and best wishes to Lewis S, Alice F and Milla W at the Division Championships.

We would also like to thank one of our parents, Leigh Newbery, who volunteered his time to be our school’s nominated timekeeper throughout the day.

Band Camp

We are looking forward to our annual Band Camp on Sunday 15th March. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our band students to come together, rehearse intensively, and grow as an ensemble. In addition to rehearsals, there will be sectionals where our Band Captains and Section Leaders will have an opportunity to showcase their leadership skills. There will also be a guest conductor visiting from Eltham High School’s renowned music program, a trivia quiz, and a pizza lunch!

Parents, please make sure to give consent on Compass and provide details of any dietary requirements so that we can order some yummy pizzas!
