CAREERS & APPLIED LEARNING NEWS

VET IN ACTION
What a flying start our students have had undertaking their VET courses. With over 100 students choosing to complete a VET course this year, it has definitely been a very busy start to the year.
Each student has begun with a positive attitude knowing that the VET course chosen will provide extra skills and knowledge towards their education pathways. Both VCE, VCE VM and Year 10 students have to be commended on their ability to navigate through both their Nazareth timetable and their VET timetable. Well done to all of our amazing VET students.
VET Snapshot this week
We travel to Chisholm Berwick to see what our student Leah has been doing in Certificate II in Plumbing Pre-apprenticeship. So far she has been outshining students from other schools in her class both with theory and practical work remaining ahead at all times. Leah has been hard at work developing practical trade skills, recently focusing on roof cladding techniques. This hands-on session provided valuable experience in measuring, cutting, and securing roofing materials while working safely at heights.
Students learned how to interpret plans, prepare roof surfaces, and install metal cladding with precision to ensure proper drainage and weatherproofing. A strong emphasis was placed on workplace health and safety, correct tool use, teamwork, and attention to detail — all essential skills in the plumbing and construction industries. Well Done, Leah.
Swinburne Wantirna’s Allied Health Assistants Year 2 course is proving no match for Belinda as she masters the role plays in Patient transport and was the only student to pick up on Health and Safety issues.
Recently, during a practical session, the class focused on safe patient transport and effective communication. They practised assisting clients with mobility, including the correct use of wheelchairs and mobility aids, while following workplace health and safety guidelines. Emphasis was placed on maintaining client dignity, ensuring comfort, and using clear, respectful verbal and non-verbal communication throughout the process.
The session highlighted the importance of building trust, explaining procedures clearly, and responding appropriately to client needs. Keep up the great work Belinda.
Flynn Lubbe and Kuba Drogo undertook their White Card Training as part of their Certificate II In Electrotechnology. This qualification is a legal requirement for anyone entering a construction site. It is to ensure they understand basic workplace health and safety requirements before entering a construction site. It confirms they have completed general construction induction training and can recognise hazards, follow safety procedures, and help maintain a safe working environment for themselves and others.
Our students Patrick, Nestor, Ben, Regina and Pieta have been busy in the kitchen as part of their Certificate II in Cookery VET course. Under the guidance of Chef Nathan and the assistance of Alyssa Florio students are gaining valuable hands-on experience and practical skills. From mastering knife techniques to preparing and presenting delicious dishes, students are learning what it takes to work in a professional kitchen environment.
The energy in the kitchen has been fantastic, with students showing creativity, resilience, and pride in their work. It must also be said that the hollandaise sauce was delightful!
These practical sessions not only build confidence but also open pathways into hospitality apprenticeships and further training. We are incredibly proud of their dedication and can’t wait to see what they cook up next!
Our future barbers are hard at work, learning the importance of health and safety before they begin their practical tasks, which they’re very much looking forward to. They’ve been developing a strong understanding of hygiene, infection control, and maintaining a safe workspace — essential foundations for any successful barber.
With this knowledge in place, they’ll soon be moving on to the practical side of their training, and we can’t wait to see their skills come to life.
