Maths: Tips for Parents

Mrs Maria Wilson - Leader of Pedagogy

Kindergarten -

Weeks 8-9 -Topic: Time

  • Initially, children will learn about time through using language such as yesterday, today and tomorrow and through comparing the time it takes to complete activities. I can clap my hands three times while you throw a ball in the air and catch it.
  • Record special events on a calendar and talk about how many days or weeks before the event.

    You can help your Kindergarten child at home by:

  • naming the days of the week and months of the year. Contextualise times of the year using special celebrations such as birthdays or cultural events
  • looking at the phases of the moon and the position of the sun
  • involving them with weekly routines for school and home life. For example, Library day at school is Thursday, it’s PE uniform day on Monday and our family goes to Nanna’s house for lunch every Sunday
  • using the days of the week and months of the year.
  • identify times of the year on a calendar or in a diary using special celebrations such as birthdays or cultural events

    Counting tips:

  • Count stairs, letter boxes, or objects in two, threes, fives and tens whenever opportunities arise;
  • Put out the number of knives and forks needed for dinner and ask your child to count them in sets of two;
  • Talk about numbers whenever opportunities arise. Ask questions such as “Which is bigger/smaller/the same/different?”, house numbers on long streets;
  • Take note of larger numbers as they occur (e.g. house numbers, page numbers in books).
  • Encourage your child to read the numbers and talk about other ways they could have been written.

Year 3/4

Weeks 7-10 Topic: Addition and Inverse Operations

  • Continual reinforcement of the concept of addition in the real world is extremely beneficial to student learning and understanding. Adding totals at the supermarket, in the shed or collating minutes on a device are all examples of practicing the skill.
