PFA Mother's Day Breakfast
Thank you to all of the mums, aunties, grandmothers and significant women in the lives of our students and I hope you have a great Mother's Day on Sunday. Thank you also to everyone who attended our traditional PFA Mother's Day breakfast on Friday 8 May. Again, our Middle Years building was filled to brim with students and mums. Thank you to our amazing PFA led by Andy Bee and all of the parents for organising the event and creating a great breakfast. A big thanks to Bake House- in Mont Albert village for your support of the breakfast with an amazing spread and to local businesses for donations of prizes for the raffle.
Finally, a congratulations to 4 of our Year 12 students who spoke at the breakfast about the importance and significance of their mums in their lives. They spoke passionately and from the heart and many tears were shed. Thank you.
Building Works
Work is progressing well on the two storey Middle Years building. The scaffolding has come down and visitors to the College will see work being undertaken in the carpark, front of College, access road and the landscaping around the building begin. Inside the classrooms are almost complete and we are on schedule to start classes on the first day of Term 3 in our new spaces.
If you are coming onto site, please note the changes to walkways and entrances to the Admin building due to building works. Please follow all temporary signage in place to ensure safety. If you come onto the site in the evening, you will also see our new security and safety solar lighting is in and working. This will make a difference to our community users and all car park users when visiting the College of an evening.
Car Parking
Thank you to all in our community for your support and patience during this time of limited parking around the College. Student safety at pick-up and drop off is paramount and I thank all students and parents for your courtesy and consideration at pick up.
College Master Plan
Last week we released a video of our long term 'Concept Master Plan' via our social media. With our 16,000 views in 5 days, we know that it has been a popular topic of conversation in our wider community.
What is in the Concept Master Plan?
Our current Stadium converting to a Performing Arts space with a 300+ seat theatre
Middle Year building- due to be completed in June 2026
A 3 Story STEAM Centre. The next stage in our rebuild is a modern centre for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. The STEAM subjects are booming at Koonung, and we need facilities to match our exceptional programs.
A new Senior School building
Community Sports Centre- a three court in-door stadium to support our program, and community sport including basketball, badminton, volleyball and other sports in our area.
Below is an image of that concept Master Plan.
Please note that this plan is not funded- it is a plan for our future. However, that future is also now. We need new facilities to support STEAM now. With the upcoming state government election, this is something everyone in our local community should be asking all candidates. Please reach out to all local candidates and support our push for better learning facilities.
Secondly, the addition of a community indoor sports stadium on Koonung's site will both benefit the College and its students, as well as our wider community. One way you can support this possible facility is by responding to the Whitehorse Council's draft indoor sports plan.
Whitehorse Council Draft Indoor sports facilities feedback
Whitehorse City Council is seeking community feedback on indoor sports facilities — and there’s a real opportunity for Koonung to partner on a shared, multi-court stadium that benefits both students and the wider community. Whitehorse Council is considering its options for indoor sports court in the area. One option is to partner with Koonung and build a new facility on our site. We think that is a great idea and are keen to work with Whitehorse Council to see this happen.
This is where you come in. Take a few minutes to complete the survey and show your support.
Why it matters:
- This part of Whitehorse needs more community indoor sporting facilities to meet the growing demand for accessible, year-round sports infrastructure.
- Koonung’s location next to Elgar Park is ideal and would complement the existing outdoor facilities to become a comprehensive sporting precinct.
- The College has invested and continues to expand car parking to support a community use stadium on site.
- Koonung Secondary College is home to the Koonung Comets. A multicourt stadium would provide a permanent home base for this rapidly growing club, strengthen the club’s identity, and significantly boost local basketball participation across all age groups and skill levels.
- A multicourt stadium would support multiple sports, diverse community groups, and events, while fostering health, well being and social inclusion.
- It’s also a key part of Koonung’s long-term vision and commitment to sharing its grounds with a joint use stadium.
👉 Please complete the short or long survey and share your support for a joint-use stadium at Koonung. The survey closes 1st June 2026.
