Holy Week at St Mary of the Cross Parish
Holy Week
(Week beginning Monday 30 March)
As we mark Holy Week, we reflect on another year of turning our faith and love into action through Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion. Throughout Lent, we’ve witnessed the power that our school community can generate when we come together as one, and heard four incredible stories of resilience and strength which offer a window into the kind of transformative impact we can achieve.
In Tanzania, Sisilia’s life was changed with access to nearby clean water. She can now spend more time studying so she can fulfil her dreams of one day becoming a pilot.
Monoranjon, from Bangladesh, learnt climate-resilient farming techniques, helping his family survive and build a safer, more sustainable future.
In rural Fiji, Manaini learnt food processing and gardening skills through Caritas Australia’s partner, FRIEND, creating more income opportunities to support her children’s education.
And in Gaza, Caritas Jerusalem staff remain committed to providing lifesaving support, standing in solidarity with families enduring this conflict.
But the work isn’t done yet, and there is still time to donate! Will you help make this our school’s most meaningful Project Compassion yet?
Year 3/4 Mass
Fr Michael came to St Brigid’s on Friday 27th to celebrate Mass with our 3/4 students as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Eucharist for the first time early next term. During his homily and in question time after the Mass, he was very impressed with our students' knowledge and insightful questions. For example, being able to use the term ‘Transubstantiation’ and explain that during the Eucharist, the bread and wine miraculously change in substance, but not appearance, into the actual body and blood of Jesus Christ. And asking why we can receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and Reconciliation a number of times but Baptism and Confirmation only once?
Fr Michael then was able to offer five of our students the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the first time.
Holy Week Liturgies
Holy Week is the most important week in the Catholic church. This week of great reverence and reflection spans the final eight days of Jesus’ life—from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday. At St Brigid’s we have celebrated through a series of prayer services.
Palm Sunday where Jesus triumphantly enters Jerusalem was led by our Foundation to Year 2.
The 3/4 students helped us reflect on Holy Thursday with a focus on Jesus celebrating the Last Supper, praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, and being arrested.
Our Year 5/6 students led us in praying the 14 Stations of the Cross which takes us through the main events of Good Friday. This includes Jesus being sentenced to death, scourged, beaten, crucified, and dying on the Cross.
We will celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus on Monday 20th April at 2.15pm. All are welcome to attend.
