Popular local identity and notable raconteur, Ivan S, was recently spotted at the BHCS year 5/6 swimming carnival. Comfortably attired in team Yarra colours, snappy dark blue trousers, a crisp light blue shirt, well-worn and obviously extremely comfortable brown shoes (no allusion to Yarra here, except maybe the current state of the river – brown), but missing his usual jaunty tie, he pressed the flesh with all and sundry. Laughing enthusiastically and engaging in animated dialogue, Ivan moved effortlessly through the crowd of spectators, competitors and officials alike, conversing with anyone and everyone who would listen. Even those from the rival houses were drawn in by his charismatic charm and sharp wit.
Ivan held his audiences captive, sharing countless stories and anecdotes from a no-doubt mischievous past. No-one was off-limits for this enthusiastic ‘celebrity’, not even babies. I’m sure if there was a dog around, he would have willingly shaken hands with it. The question is, however, why did Ivan choose to attend this particular event? Perhaps he is planning a foray into the great Victorian political maelstrom? Maybe his motivation is to further expand his already wide sphere of influence, or is he perhaps, under the guise of niceness and pleasantries, plotting an educational coup? When asked by our roving reporter why he was attending, he responded with a simple ‘To get away from the emails’.
Obviously for Ivan, emails create some level of discomfort, or perhaps they are just an all-consuming vortex which sucks the life out of any leader, resulting in just a shadow of the former person? These are questions that will most likely never be fully answered. Whatever his reason for attending, Ivan was extremely well received by the adoring masses, leaving them smiling and, no doubt, with warm fuzzy feelings in their hearts. And the public will wait, with bated breath, to see what transpires in the current all-encompassing educational world that is ‘Ivan S’.
