BALANCE

BY HANNAH DENNY  (SECONDARY MUSIC TEACHER)

Joining a local choir in Tecoma and swimming laps at the Belgrave pool have been recent additions to my weekly schedule. Equally valued, the immense joy I receive from singing with others beautifully balances the solo act of swimming. More than ever, the start of 2025 has reminded me that life requires balance, and there are times when you must force yourself to make decisions that will tip that balance point back into a healthy position.

A balance point for some might be Jesus calling to “come away by yourself to a desolate place and rest a while” (Mark 6:31). My encouragement is: don’t be afraid to go and rest.

Others might need to balance their attitude and perspective, a reminder that “whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17). My encouragement is to give countercultural thanks.

For those always striving for more than they need, maybe a balance of contentment is needed. Paul, in the New Testament, writes, “Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content” (Philippians 4:11).

My encouragement is that you will seek contentment through God’s provision and not man's.

My balance point is this beautiful verse from Hebrews 6:19-20: “We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf.” My mind creates two images: one of a boat anchored strong in the midst of a turbulent sea, and the other of Jesus beckoning me to come with him through that torn curtain into the inner sanctuary. Equally valued images, equally showing the depth of God’s love for me, and for you.
