What is Career Planning?
For many students, finding the right career or job may be a difficult and frustrating task. Students may have a number of careers in mind, but they may not be sure which one is the right one for them. Students may consider:
- What am I good at?
- Which skills do I like to use?
- What kind of education do I need?
- What skills and experience do I need?
- Do I have the personality or character for the job?
- What kind of settings is most productive for me?
Career Planning is regarded as a necessary guiding tool to explore likes, dislikes, skills and vocational activities. Students undertake career planning to explore career options and paths and make appropriate career choices. This may involve a course of study, upgrading existing skills and / or volunteer work.
Career Planning Tools
Some students use various “Personality & Career Interest Tests” in order to understand their behaviour types and interests. These tests may show you some kinds of careers you might find satisfying.
Personality & Career Interest Tests are intended to be used by individuals as career guidance and a practical starting point for thinking about courses, jobs and careers.
It is based on the premise that vocational interests (i.e. activity preferences) may be inferred from consistent patterns of likes and dislikes. It provides one way in which people may learn about occupational options.
Remember that your interests will change from time to time. They are only a small part of helping you decide about occupations. Your abilities, opportunities, personal circumstances and the current job market will also determine what your career move will be.

Career Interest Tests
Career Interest Tests and Assessments are designed to discover the skills, aptitude and talents of students. A self-assessment can be a useful tool in assessing the areas in which a student has strengths and limitations.
The results can be useful in helping students to choose a career that is in tune with their goals and talents. While the validation of each instrument may vary from test to test, overall, these types of assessments have been proven to introduce more career options and increase the understanding of oneself.
