Curriculum Matters

Foundation

The past few weeks in Foundation have been full of excitement, fun and learning!

We’ve been exploring shapes and patterns, learning about emotions with Zones of Regulation, and having a blast at Kaboom!

Level 1

The Level One Students have been exploring how things have changed from the past to the present.

They enjoyed participating in the ‘Toys Over Time’ incursion where they explored how toys have changed over the years.

Take a look at their fascination when playing with these new and strange objects.

Level 2

Our Level 2 students have been diving into the world of data in Maths!

Working across the cohort with their peers, they explored how to collect, record, and represent data in various ways. Using tools such as tally marks, drawings, digital software and tables, students sorted and displayed information to compare results and discuss their findings. They also conducted surveys, made observations, and experimented with different graphical representations to interpret real-world data.

It has been an exciting and hands-on learning experience, helping students develop key skills in organising and understanding information!

Level 3

On the 7th of March, the Level 3 students enjoyed a day out at the Melbourne Zoo.

It was a hot day but that didn't stop us from exploring and searching for our favourite animals. We got to see a range of different animals but some of our favourites were the Orangutans, Seals, Snow Leopard and Lions.

Level 3 had an amazing opportunity to speak to some Zoo keepers who showed us how they enrich the Meerkats to mimic what it would be like in the wild.

It was an amazing day and we found out some of us are great tour guides also.

Level 4

Level 4 had an excellent surprise on the day we were doing our narrative Big write.

A special delivery was our topic and to all the students surprised a parcel arrived at school from a mystery person. The students were very excited to hear we had mail, after reading the letter they followed the instructions to find their special delivery.  A mysterious parcel. After lots of discussions and completing our Big write the students were really happy to receive pop corn to share.

Last Friday Level 4 surprised Ms Greco with a small celebration to congratulate her on her up and coming wedding. A group of students made her a paper dress and hole punched leaves to make confetti. The whole level each did a small drawing that we collaged into a book for her. Level 4 would like to wish Ms Greco and Aret a wonderful wedding tomorrow and a long and happy life together.

Level 5

In Level 5, the students have displayed a wonderful attitude to complete their National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) in the areas of Writing, Reading, Conventions of Language and Numeracy. They all came to school with charged laptops, remembered their head phones and worked conscientiously through the different tests.

In Mathematics, we have explored a range of strategies to solve multiplication problems such as the Italian Lattice method, Vertical multiplication and the Box/Array method. The students have enjoyed developing their skills in this area.

In Inquiry, the students have been busily researching information in their groups about their country for our upcoming World Fair. They are now working on how they will present their findings. They have been super engaged and excited with this project.

Level 6

Maths Walk

The Level 6 students began their maths measurement unit with a 1km walk.Students were given a map of the local area and had to estimate a point which they thought was exactly 1km from the Jells Park PS gates. We then walked a true 1km distance, measuring it with both Google Maps and a trundle wheel, and compared their original estimate with the real 1km point. A small handful of students said the distance was longer than they thought, however the majority voted that it was actually much shorter than they anticipated!

Then, we walked back to school taking a different route and students were again asked to guess the distance they expected it to be.

Here’s what a few students had to say about the task:

“It was different, fun and something you don’t get to do everyday” - Talal 6P

“It felt very fast but it was also very fun! 1km took less time to walk than I expected!” - Tiffany 6V

“It was a good opportunity to stay fit and learn how long 1km actually is and test our skills.” - Scarlett 6P

“It was very fun holding the trundle wheel and being able to count and measure the distance! Estimating the distances was fun because you never knew and some people got different guesses which was the challenge part." - Sunjae 6V

The students are using their estimates and measurements to now practice converting between cm/m/kms.

Women's Day Morning Tea

Womens day was created in 1910. The idea came from Clara Zetkin who was a German socialist activist. The first IWD was held in 1911, and ever since 1913 it has been celebrated on March 8 worldwide.

On Tuesday the 11th of March the Level Six boys put on a Womens Day feast for all the girls in the cohort . We thoroughly enjoyed it, as all the boys bought many delicious foods and drinks for us to enjoy, and some were even homemade! It was an amazing event that brought everyone together!

So from all the Level Six girls we would like to give a very special thank you to all these boys who made us feel appreciated. To the boys who gave a lovley speech, thanks for showing us respect and kindness on that beautiful day!

Moorabbin Air Museum

The Moorabbin Aeroplane Museum opened the door to aircraft history to us on the 19th of March, 2025. Through countless displays, descriptions and interactive tours, the exotic planes of the museum truly demonstrated perspective to the story of how our dreams to fly came into life.

An introduction to planes’ first production began our tour, and it was like walking through a unique perception of time. We discovered the aircrafts of different eras, 1920s to 1950s to modern day production. Detailed, inspiring historic descriptions were supplied. Having free time at the end, many of us ventured into displays such as simulations, engine designs, view of cockpits and much more.

Overall, the experience made the atmosphere of our knowledge even more exuberant, and the generous teachers only added to the fun!
