Sacrament of Confirmation
Last Friday evening, a number of our Year 6 students received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Fr Tony Kerin confirmed the candidates during the mass which was held at Our Lady's Church. At lunchtime that day, the candidates had an opportunity to mert with Fr Kerin and discuss the significance of this Sacrament as well as the learning they had undertaken in preparatio. We congratulate and pray for the following students.
Thomas B, Nicholas D, James G, Hugo H, Betty J, James N, Ava S, Ted S, Art T, Poppy T and Alicia W
We also acknowledge their peers who have supported them on their journey:
Luca C, Lily G, Jot K, Lianna K and Matisse M
On the 15 September Lars R will be confirmed at OLGC Church, Deepdene.
At Monday's assembly these candidates were presented with cards of congratulations that had been made by every students from across the school. This is a wonderful tradition we have at OHR and is a bit of a full circle moment as they have been creating cards for Sacramental candidates since they themselves were in Prep.
Sunday Gospel
The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark
Jesus and his disciples left for the villages round Caesarea Philippi. On the way he put this question to his disciples, ‘Who do people say I am?’ And they told him. ‘John the Baptist,’ they said, ‘others Elijah; others again, one of the prophets.’ ‘But you,’ he asked, ‘who do you say I am?’ Peter spoke up and said to him, ‘You are the Christ.’ And he gave them strict orders not to tell anyone about him.
And he began to teach them that the Son of Man was destined to suffer grievously, to be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and to be put to death, and after three days to rise again; and he said all this quite openly. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. But, turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said to him, ‘Get behind me, Satan! Because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’
He called the people and his disciples to him and said, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it.’
Discussion Questions
1. Jesus asked the disciples ‘Who do people say I am?’ What are some words you would use to describe Jesus?
2. Jesus wants people to ‘take up their cross’ and follow him. What does that mean?
3. What are some of the ‘crosses’ that people carry?
