One of the best ways to accelerate and cater to different learning styles is through experiential learning. This was the approach to learning the Year 11 VCE Legal Studies class engaged in this semester.
Students participated in a civil case mock trial wherein our classroom was transformed into a courtroom and all students chose a specific legal personnel role. The trial was about a defamation case where a GP was defamed in a Google review.
All students worked conscientiously and enjoyed the procedures and interesting antics of the witnesses giving their oral evidence in our mock courtroom.
The courtroom consisted of:
Judges: Eleni A., Matteo D.S. and Matthew J.
Plaintiff barristers: Emily W., Taya R.
Solicitors: Amelie M. and Darci McC.
Defence barristers: Marina C. and Prapti G.
Solicitors: Zoe V. and Jordan-Lee K.
Witnesses: Roma B., Ashley S., Nick V.A., Ramone H., Helena V., Ceren T. and Adrian A.
Jurors: Mithara R., Rafael P., Kostya K. and Nathan B.
I would like to commend the commitment of the students who had the major roles of Barristers and Judges and congratulate all the students who participated wholeheartedly.
It is pleasing to see that we have some budding lawyers in the making.

Zoo Conservation Excursion
Recently, our Year 11 VM class embarked on an exciting educational excursion to Melbourne Zoo. The day was filled with awe-inspiring moments as we explored the diverse array of animals that the zoo has to offer. From the mesmerising slither of the snakes to the playful antics of the Tasmanian devils, each exhibit provided a unique glimpse into the lives of these fascinating creatures. We marvelled at the majestic gorillas, observed the gentle giants; the elephants, and admired the elegant giraffes. This hands-on experience not only broadened our understanding of wildlife but also underscored the importance of conservation and community engagement.
Our visit also offered a valuable perspective on the role of such institutions in fostering community awareness and environmental stewardship. By interacting with the various exhibits and learning about the zoo’s conservation efforts, we gained insights into how Melbourne Zoo contributes to both global and local ecological efforts. This experience allowed us to appreciate the vital role that community institutions play in promoting awareness and education about wildlife, reinforcing our connection to the broader community. Overall, the trip was both educational and inspiring, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the commitment of Melbourne Zoo to preserving it. - Ryan R.
Year 11 VM Girls Transformed the School with a Garden Project
We, the Year 11 VM girls, proved that hard work, creativity, and a bit of fun could bring real change to the school grounds. Our garden project blossomed into something special and left a lasting impression on the school community. From the very beginning, we were gung-ho about the project. Enthusiastically, we dove into the work, clearing over a dozen bins of weeds and getting our hands dirty—sometimes literally. In between tasks, we kept spirits high with playful pranks, using slugs, caterpillars, and other grubs to surprise one another. This lighthearted approach made the hard work feel more like an adventure, bonding us closer together.
**Planning and Preparation**
Before any planting could begin, we knew a solid plan was needed. With help from Mrs. Kuzmicky and Mr. Florance, we developed a schedule and discussed how to organise equipment. Teamwork was key as we divided up responsibilities and ensured everything ran smoothly. Research was another important part of our preparation. We took time to study which seasonal plants would thrive at that time of year, looking at everything from flowering plants to herbs. We also learned about the different types of fertilizers needed to keep the garden healthy and vibrant, making sustainability a central part of our plan.
**Sustainability and Creativity Combined**
Our design wasn’t just about beauty; it was about creating a lasting, sustainable space. Compost from the school’s kitchen was used to enrich the soil, and drought-resistant plants were chosen to conserve water. We also aimed to attract wildlife, selecting plants that would draw birds, bees, and butterflies, helping to build a thriving ecosystem.
**Fun, Friendship, and Legacy**
As the garden took shape, we took pride not just in the physical space we created, but in the teamwork and dedication we showed. Our garden became a reminder of how much could be achieved when passion, planning, and a little bit of humour were combined. The garden is now a peaceful spot for students and staff alike, standing as a testament to what could be accomplished when we were willing to dig in—both figuratively and literally! It’s a space that will continue to grow and evolve, just like the students who created it.

Year 11 Mock Job Interviews
Recently, our Year 11 VM students had the unique opportunity to participate in mock job interviews, an experience that was both challenging and immensely rewarding. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Younger and Mr. Minster, who organized and facilitated the entire event, this experience was a significant step in preparing us for our future careers.
In preparation for the interviews, we dedicated time to run through a range of questions related to our career pathways. This preparation helped us understand what to expect and how to present ourselves effectively. The culmination of this effort was a workshop held at Malvern Town Hall, where we were able to hone our interview skills further.
As the day of the interviews approached, many of us began to feel a mix of anxiety and nerves, especially with the knowledge that the interviews would last between 20 to 30 minutes. Despite these initial apprehensions, the support and guidance from Mr Younger and Mr Minster helped us approach the interviews with a sense of confidence.
The interviews themselves proved to be a valuable experience. We were able to demonstrate our abilities, show our mature charm, and receive constructive feedback from the interviewers. The positive response from Mr Younger and Mr Minster affirmed that our hard work and preparation had paid off.
In conclusion, the mock job interviews were more beneficial than many of us initially expected. We gained practical insights into the interview process and learned how to present ourselves professionally. A big thank you goes to Mr Younger and Mr Minster for their dedication and for making this opportunity possible. Their efforts have equipped us with valuable skills that will undoubtedly aid us in our future endeavours. - Ryan R.
