Home Inquiry:
Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. As students complete a book, they are to record the author, title and date of finishing in their Readers Workshop book.
Please ask students to continue talking through what they did and learnt on camp, thinking about how what they learnt can be applied to future situations.
And just like that, camp is over. As teachers, we are thrilled with the resilience and positivity that students approached the camp with, especially at times they were a little unsure. We know that many students tried a myriad of different and new things from activities, to sleeping away from home, to trying new foods. We have witnessed students using a variety of strategies in a variety of situations and we aim to build on these strategies as students continue to take risks in their learning.
Unit Of Inquiry: The learning at camp relates to our ‘Who We Are’ unit which is focusing on ‘Changes people experience at different stages of their lives affect who they are.’ Also, as part of this unit, students will begin growth and development classes. These sessions will be run over the next two weeks and presented by Kidz Biz Education.
Literacy: Students are writing a narrative of their choice. In reading, we are looking at setting up routines for Readers’ Workshop. During this time, we will be discussing things such as finding ‘right fit books’ and the ways in which reading is thinking. We are also establishing routines in Spelling with a focus on determining the syllables in words and identifying phonemes (the sounds in words) and the correct graphemes (letter combinations) to spell these words.
Mathematics: We are currently working on mental computation and moving onto the operations of addition/subtraction.
From Thursday, when we return to school, please ensure your child has working headphones and a keyboard. The iPad keyboard will be important in the development of keyboard skills which will be part of their class learning. The headphones will be regularly used in class for a variety of purposes. Both items will be necessary for Year 5s to complete NAPLAN. Again, thank you for helping with this.
We are just reminding parents that Year 6 shirts and jumpers will be billed to Term 1 fees.
iPad agreements will be sent home very soon. Can you please ensure you have gone through the agreement with your child. We have had cluster discussions about expectations around iPad usage and we appreciate this being reinforced at home.
Yours sincerely,
