I’d like to officially introduce the Student Leadership Team for 2024 to Sunbury College News!

We have an amazing Team that have had an even more amazing start to the year. They are dedicated, resourceful and passionate. They are wearing their badges proudly and will happily talk about any initiatives they have planned for this Term and beyond with the school community. Please see below the brief outlines of each role description for a better understanding of our Leadership Team and what they do. Each Captain is expected to represent the school and its values both inside the school and in the community at large.

My role is to facilitate, support and encourage the Student Leadership in their areas. My management in this space of students and teachers that support the Student Leadership Team have enabled me to really connect with various facets around the school and community and I am thoroughly enjoying the position.

School Council Representatives

Overview of the role

The School Council Representatives are an important student leadership role at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. School councils are made up of elected members from school staff, the school community, the local community, and students. They are responsible for:

Setting the direction and vision for the school, including creating a strategic plan
Leading school community conversations about key issues and challenges in education
Developing and updating school policies, such as student safety and behaviour, curriculum development and uniform
Making sure that the school is responsive to the needs of the local community

The Student School Council Representatives liaise with the Leadership Team to take initiatives and issues to School Council.

Sustainability Captain

Overview of the role

The Sustainability Captain is an important student leadership role at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Sustainability Captain acts works alongside the school to promote participation in and student ownership of sustainability initiatives at the school; such as recycling, composting, facilitating maintenance of the school garden patch, power saving and others. This position includes public speaking duties and has a significant role to keep improving the opportunities for students to feel connected to Sunbury College by promoting more sustainable lifestyles for the school community.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Captain

Overview of the role

The STEM Captain is an exciting student leadership role at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of opportunity to leave a legacy at the school. The STEM Captain acts alongside the school to promote participation in and student ownership of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics across the school as well as support the promotion and recognition of student’s achievements in these areas beyond school. This position works with staff and students to promote involvement in competitions both inside and outside of the school and continue improving the STEM program at Sunbury College.

Sport Captain

Overview of the role

The Sports Captain is an important student leadership role at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Sports Captain acts works alongside the school to promote participation in and student ownership of interschool sports, Swimming Carnival and Athletics Carnival as well as support the promotion and recognition of student’s sporting success beyond school. This position includes public speaking duties and to talk with fellow students when needed about events and how to keep improving the Sport program at Sunbury College.

Music Captain

Overview of the role

The Music Captain is an important student leadership role at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Music Captain acts works alongside the school to promote participation in and student ownership of bell music, school concerts and learning instruments as well as support the promotion and recognition of student’s musical success beyond school. This position includes setting up for performances across the school year. As this is a significant role where there are a lot of passionate students it is also a part of the role of the Music Captain to talk with fellow students when needed about events and how to keep improving the Music program at Sunbury College.

Diversity and Inclusion Captain

Overview of the role

The Diversity and Inclusion Captain is an important student leadership role at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Diversity and Inclusion Captain works alongside the school to promote participation in and student ownership of promoting an inclusive school environment that respects and celebrates diversity. This position involves public speaking duties and liaising with fellow students when needed about events and how to keep improving the opportunities for students to feel connected to Sunbury College by continuing to make Sunbury College a space where diversity is celebrated.

Clubs Captain

Overview of the role

The Clubs Captain is an important student leadership role at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Clubs Captain acts works alongside the school to promote participation in and student ownership of a club culture that facilitates students coming together around shared interests. This position involves public speaking duties and liaising with fellow students when needed about events and how to keep improving the opportunities for students to feel connected to Sunbury College through their interests and passions.

Junior School Captain

Overview of the role

The Junior School Captain is one of the most prestigious positions for a student to hold at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Junior School Captain acts as the student representative of Years 7-8 students of the school and is expected to represent the school and its values both inside the school and in the community. This position that requires public speaking duties and is a significant role that represents many different students, it is also a part of the role of the Junior School Captain to talk with fellow students when needed about events and initiatives in the school that impact students and represent those views to school leadership.

Middle School Captain

Overview of the role

The Middle School Captain is one of the most prestigious positions for a student to hold at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The Middle School Captain acts as the student representative of Years 9 & 10 students of the school and is expected to represent the school and its values both inside the school and in the community. This position requires public speaking duties and is a significant role that represents many different students, it is also a part of the role of the Middle School Captain to talk with fellow students when needed about events and initiatives in the school that impact students and represent those views to school leadership.

School Captain

Overview of the role

The School Captain is one of the most prestigious positions for a student to hold at Sunbury College and comes with a great deal of responsibility. The School Captain acts as the student face of the school and is expected to represent the school and its values both inside the school and in the community. This position requires extensive public speaking duties and is a significant role that represents many different students, it is also a part of the role of the School Captain to talk with fellow students when needed about events and initiatives in the school that impact students and represent those views to school leadership and Student Leadership. As well as running Student Led Focus Groups to collect data, gain perspective and initiate change.
