Learning Powers this Week!

Last week we introduced to our new St Joseph’s Learning Powers. These have been designed to support students to build their dispositions for learning and embed the skills needed to be lifelong learners. Each week students and staff will be focused on one or two learning powers by connecting them to our learning to deepen our understanding. This week our Focus Learning Power is Motivated Learner and Reflective Learning.

Motivated Learner

This learning power supports students to build their agency and seek out ways to strengthen and challenge their learning.  It encourages students to think about how they learn best and make choices that ensure their learning reflects their best efforts.

Reflective Learner

Our second learning power is Reflective Learner. Reflective learners think about their strengths and how they learn best. They also seek feedback and set goals to keep growing in their learning.

Being a Motivated and Reflective Learner at home:

When do you feel most motivated to learn or share your learning?

How do you praise your child's efforts when practising their learning?

Do you have a space for your child to learn at home that will support them to be organised and focused?

How coulyou give constructive feedback that helps your child to keep growing as a learner?

Targeting Learning Needs Through Data

At St Joseph’s teachers engage in an ongoing cycle of learning and teaching. This cycle is driven by the evidence and data that teachers collect about each student. To ensure teachers are engaging all students at their appropriate level, they collect evidence and data from a number of sources, including:

  • Work samples
  • One to one conferences
  • Open ended tasks
  • Observations
  • Evidence tables
  • Standardised testing for Mathematics and Literacy.
  • Tracking on continuums of learning
  • And many more

NAPLAN - One point of Data

Another form of assessment schools collect is NAPLAN (The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy). NAPLAN is a national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sit each year. This is a form of data collected by schools at a point in time to check students' progression in literacy and numeracy. It doesn’t replace ongoing assessments teachers use throughout the year to track student performance. As with all learning assessments, teachers identify students who need an adjustment to how this is delivered or if this assessment is appropriate for their learning abilities or well-being. Our Yr 3 and 5 teachers and our learning team are currently exploring these adjustments. If you are concerned about your child sitting NAPLAN please email leadership at leadership@sjcribpoint.catholic.edu.au.
