Secondary School

Examinations
Year Twelve examinations began this week, which kicks off an important few weeks in our Academic Calendar. Examinations always cause a buzz around the campus! The students have equipped themselves well and we wish them all the best. Next week we have Year Ten examinations and information regarding course selections for next year, and in Week Nine we have Year Eleven examinations.
Albany Eisteddfod
This Week our students have been taking part in the annual Albany Eisteddfod, where we celebrate the talent of young musicians from across the Great Southern region with 379 entries this year. Our students have been spending time at the Albany Entertainment Centre throughout the week performing in various ensembles and solo performances. The showcase concert “Encore!” takes place at the Albany Entertainment Centre on Friday 13 June at 7.00pm. Tickets are on sale now and are also available at the Box Office.

Young Writers Collective
Throughout this week, our Secondary School students have been spending time at the Albany Library in workshops, where they have been inspired to write with freedom and creativity. Students from Years Seven to Ten have been involved across the two days. This initiative has been organised by our Gifted and Talented Coordinator, Mr Rose and overseen by Mrs Karen Bradbury.
Science Olympiad
For those that have a leaning towards Science, Mr Rose has also coordinated the Years Nine to Ten Junior Science Olympiad where a select number of students were able to represent the school in a team to compete. This is a fantastic opportunity for our young scientists.
Year Nine 'Try a Trade' Day
Another exciting event this week was the Year Nine 'Try a Trade' Day, which provided a select number of students with the opportunity to experience life in a workplace, learning important skills and gaining knowledge about various industries. This might even inform course pathways and choices in the years to come. Thank you to Mrs O’Donnell, who coordinated this experience for our students.
Year Seven Entrepreneurs Excursion
Mr Ritchie has been at it again with his Humanities classes, organising an amazing excursion for them as they learn Economics this term, taking the students out for an Entrepreneurs' excursion. Mr Ritchie took the students on an excursion to Bob’s Bikes and also to the newly opened Dune Brewery (for a brief look) and a conversation with the owners about how they used their skills, creativity, and hard work to start a business in town.
Discover GSG Day
Tomorrow, we host a Discover GSG day for future and prospective students. This is for students who will be attending GSG next year or are considering applying. It is heartening to see so many RSVPs and shows that GSG is a popular choice within our community. The students will have experiences with our teachers, participating in exciting Music, Science, Humanities and Physical Education lessons. We will also host them for recess and lunch, where they will interact with our current students, who will make them feel welcome and be able to answer some of the questions they may have, and quell some of the nerves.
As you can see, any given week at GSG is a busy place to be! There are so many opportunities for our students to enrich their classroom learning by experiencing other extension activities. Of course, it is a balance to ensure that we are maximising time spent in classrooms, preparing the students for their examinations and choosing the right times of year to offer these activities.
