May was the National Reading Month for Scholastic Australia and if our Book Fair is anything to go by, then Roselea is supporting reading in a big way.
I cannot say thank you enough to all the families, grandparents, friends and children who supported our book fair. It was a wonderful week of celebrating reading and writing.
Our week kicked off with our author visit and then the next day our Book Fair. It was fantastic watching our students complete their wish lists and browsing the shelves, discussing with their friends and family what they would like to purchase and why.
On Monday our grandparents, parents and families came to purchase books. On that day alone we sold $4500 worth of books and merchandise. We cannot thank our community enough for their generosity. It was amazing. Over the next 2 days we again sold $3500 worth of stock.
In all we sold over $8000 of books, journals, diaries and writing supplies. This means our homes are full of books and that reading and books are valued by our community. A big bonus to the book fair is the rewards, and I now have just over $2300 to spend on new books for the library. This is fantastic. I always point out to the children that whenever they buy a book from Scholastic Bookclub they are helping to buy a book for our library. Once again, children will be able to see how true this is.
Reading for pleasure provides so much to a child’s education and helps their social and mental wellbeing also. Reading benefits include: - enhanced language and literacy skills, improved cognitive development, increased empathy, and stronger academic performance. Reading also fosters creativity, imagination, and the ability to concentrate. These are just some of the benefits.
So, you can never go wrong with a book.
I have asked the students, and they all agreed, we should do this again next year. So, we will be. Stay tuned for dates.
Thank you again.
