Mathematics

Helping children understand the role of maths in the world around them supports learning in fun and meaningful ways. From planning a trip to setting the table, maths helps us solve problems and make decisions every day.

Maths Game: Shape Spy

Exploring shapes sharpens observation and geometry skills, which are key parts of the maths curriculum.

How to Play:

  1. Choose a room in your house (or explore outside) and challenge your child to find as many shapes as they can.
  2. For younger children, stick with basic shapes (circle, square, triangle). For older children, include 3D shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube) or angles.
  3. Extend the challenge by having them describe features: "How many sides does it have? Are the sides equal?"
  4. Keep a tally of each shape they find and make a simple bar graph afterward.

This activity builds spatial awareness and encourages children to see maths in their everyday surroundings.

Maths at Home Tip: Use Maths in Planning

Whether you're planning a family outing or organising a birthday party, involve your child in the process. Ask them to help with counting guests, setting a budget, working out travel time, or dividing food portions. These practical applications of maths support real-world understanding and give your child ownership of the learning process.

Maths becomes more engaging when it’s linked to everyday life. Keep looking for ways to bring numbers and problem-solving into your routines!
