Science in Y1 IEL Reception/Year 1 Teacher Ms Alisha

This term in science, the class have been learning about the basic needs of plants and animals. As part of their inquiry, students conducted an experiment to find out if plants need water to survive. Over several weeks, they carefully observed two plants—one watered and one not—and recorded their findings. Through their observations, students discovered that plants do, in fact, need water to stay alive. This hands-on experiment helped build both their scientific thinking and English vocabulary in a fun and engaging way.

Nell Harris - visit to B2 Year 2 Teacher Ms Louise

Our class was lucky to have a recent visit from Nell Harris. Nell is an author and illustrator of Neurodiverse books for children and parents. Her passion is advocating and participating in building a neuroinclusive future for everyone.

Nell was diagnosed as neurodiverse with AuDHD (autism and ADHD) in her 30’s. She went on a journey of discovery with her eldest daughter. Through this journey she discovered that she is amazingly different and embraces and celebrates these differences.

Nell shared her story with us and some of her very favourite books. We got to read them and share them with our friends. Nell read us a story about embracing ourselves for the amazing humans that we are and for us to celebrate our uniqueness and what is special about ourselves.

Nell has written and illustrated a number of books to celebrate and embrace being different, being amazing and embracing you for you! We were lucky enough for Nell to sign the books that she wrote that are in our school library.

Art in B2

This term we have been learning about layered art and made these amazing pieces of art. We made a pattern on a piece of card, then we glued on some wool following the pattern we had created. Our next step was to cover the wool pattern with alfoil. We then used permanent textas to colour in each section. How fabulous does our art look?

Adelaide Zoo excursion - IEL classes

Y3 (Ms Linta), Y1(Ms Alisha) & G1 (Ms Shelly and Ms Georgina)

Our recent visit to the Adelaide Zoo was a resounding success, providing students with an exciting and educational experience. The excursion allowed students to explore a diverse range of animals and observe different species up close, enhancing their understanding of wildlife and natural habitats.

Throughout the day, students engaged in interactive learning sessions that highlighted the importance of wildlife conservation and the need to protect animals and the environment.

In addition to observing the animals, students worked collaboratively in groups to create dioramas of various habitats. This hands-on activity encouraged creativity and teamwork, allowing students to apply their knowledge in a practical and fun way.

South Australian Museum Excursion - Year 3/4

G2 (Mr Mac & Ms Kathryn) and G3 (Ms Claudia)

The Year 3/4 students recently explored the South Australian Museum’s mineral gallery as part of their science learning, on rocks, minerals and soils. Acting as “mineral detectives,” they sketched fascinating specimens, observed different textures and colours, and discovered how these natural resources are used in everyday life. The excursion offered a hands-on opportunity to deepen their understanding of Earth’s materials in an engaging and memorable way.

The students did an amazing job of demonstrating our school values throughout the day, being responsible and thoughtful as we navigated catching trains, walking through the city and exploring the busy museum. It was a fantastic day for everyone involved!

NAIDOC Week Excursion to the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre

Some of our students visited the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre this week, facilitated by the Southern Cultural Immersion group.  Students engaged in cultural experiences such as Boomerang Painting and throwing, Bush Tucker Tours and Weaving Workshops.  This was an opportunity to learn about and develop their understanding of Aboriginal Culture whilst having fun.
