- Science and Agriculture
This term has been full of hands-on experiments, exciting challenges, and in-depth learning across all stages. Our students proudly represented the school in the Titration Challenge and the Science Activity and Quiz Challenge held in Wollongong, demonstrating both skill and enthusiasm. Back in the classroom, each year group has been busy exploring fascinating concepts through experiments, assignments, and collaborative projects. Here is a snapshot of what each cohort has been up to.
Year 7 - Earth, Space, and the Power of Tides
Year 7 students are nearing the end of their engaging Earth and Space unit, where they have been learning about the dynamic systems that shape our planet. A major focus has been on understanding tides and the role of the Moon in influencing Earth’s oceans. Through diagrams, simulations, and class discussion, students have developed a deeper appreciation for how celestial movements affect our daily lives.
Year 8 - Exploring Magnets and Gravity
Year 8 has recently wrapped up an exciting unit on magnetism and gravity. Students explored how magnetic fields interact and how gravitational force operates in space and on Earth. Practical activities included experimenting with magnetic poles, building electromagnets, and investigating gravity through free-fall experiments. It has been a hands-on term that has sparked plenty of scientific curiosity!
Year 9 - Plate Tectonics Assignment
Year 9 students are immersed in a research-based assignment focused on plate tectonics. They examined the mechanisms behind earthquakes, volcanoes, and continental drift. This task allows students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world geological events, enhancing their understanding of how Earth's surface is constantly changing.
Year 10 - Research Projects Across Scientific Themes
Year 10 students were hard at work on their independent research projects, which cover a wide range of science-related topics. These projects gave students the opportunity to explore areas of personal interest, develop critical thinking skills, and practise scientific investigation methods. Whether investigating medical technologies, environmental issues, or physics in sport, our Year 10 students are showing initiative and creativity.
Year 11 - Dissection and Depth Study on Biodiversity
This term, Year 11 has taken a deep dive into biodiversity as part of their depth study. They have been analysing ecosystems, adaptations, and the importance of species diversity in maintaining ecological balance. A highlight earlier on module 2 was their series of dissections, which included fish gills, the heart of a sheep, and plant transverse sections from lettuce and celery leaves. These practicals allowed students to observe internal structures firsthand, supporting their understanding of biological function and adaptation.
