Learning Success

Learning and Support

This term, the Secondary Studies faculty is abuzz with creativity and enthusiasm as students engage in a variety of enriching activities designed to enhance their learning experience. A standout initiative this term is the Term 2 Creative Writing Competition, which has already inspired a wave of imaginative submissions. Students are challenged to craft stories on any theme, with the added twist of incorporating elements such as a pineapple, someone who is afraid of ducks or a mysterious knock at the door. This unique challenge encourages students to think outside the box and showcase their storytelling prowess.

Our dedicated judges—Mr. Plumb, Mrs. Woods, and Mr. Evangelista—are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to read the inventive tales our students have penned. The competition has also garnered generous support from local businesses, with prizes donated by United Cinemas Narellan, Sweet Treats by Rhi, and Harry Hartog Books, adding an extra layer of excitement for participants.

In addition to the writing competition, the much-anticipated Staff vs Student Book Battle is making a return. After the students' impressive victory in Term 1, the teachers are eager to reclaim their title. This term's theme, "The Book Was Better," invites participants to delve into books that have been adapted for film or television, sparking discussions on the merits of the original texts versus their screen counterparts. For those seeking inspiration, a flyer with a curated list of suggested titles is available—feel free to pop into the Library for a copy.

Beyond these competitions, the Secondary Studies faculty continues to offer a dynamic curriculum that fosters critical thinking and creativity. Year 8 students are engaging in literacy and numeracy lessons through the IXL program, tailoring their learning to help them achieve mastery in these vital skill areas. They are also working on a collaborative 'Around the World Trip' project, integrating their literacy and numeracy skills in a practical context. Our tutoring team is actively working with small groups across other year levels, focusing on supporting students to successfully complete their HSC Minimum Standards testing. Additionally, Year 7 students have commenced the roll call reading program, fostering a culture of reading from the outset of their secondary education. These initiatives reflect our commitment to providing a well-rounded education that prepares students for future academic and personal success.

As we progress through Term 2, we encourage students and families to stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities.  We look forward to celebrating the achievements of our students and sharing their successes with the wider school community.
