Maths

Stage 4 Mathematics have been busy learning to solve equations, from simple one step equations that they were able to predict with no calculators, to multi-step equations that involved lots of working. We then spent the better part of term 2 learning about Pythagoras and his right-angle triangle theorem. Stage 4 particularly enjoyed the practical applications of Pythagoras theorem. We are currently finishing linear relationships involving reading and graphing co-ordinates.

Stage 5 Mathematics have been busy learning more advanced algebraic manipulations, involving algebraic fractions, expanding and simplifying brackets, as well as binomial expansions involving two sets of bracketed expressions. We then learnt about graphs that are non-linear like Parabolas, Hyperbolas and Cubic curves. Stage 5 are currently studying Trigonometry and are anticipating our upcoming measuring lessons where we will apply Trigonometry to make calculations of things we can’t reach, such as the height of the flagpole or the distance across the water in our dam.

Stage 6 Mathematics started the term learning lots of Ratios and Rates calculations and applications. We have more recently been using this knowledge in our research and dimension comparisons between vehicles. They have investigated internal and external dimensions, including head space, to determine their load capacity if they use their chosen vehicle for work purposes.

HSIE

Stage 4 have been learning about the Aztecs - The Spanish Conquest of the Americas. The past few weeks we have been exploring Aztec social structure, their religious beliefs and the everyday life in the magnificent city of Tenochtitlan. Students have recently engaged in creating and decorating their very own Aztec headdress.

Stage 5 have been looking at the past policies of Australian governments and how our rights and freedoms have changed. Recently, we enjoyed learning about the Freedom Rides of 1965, when some students from Sydney University, lead by Charles Perkins, went out to rural NSW to challenge racist rules and ideas.

Science

Stage 4 have been learning about contact and non-contact forces in Physical Worlds. We have been exploring friction, electrostatic force, gravity and magnetism. Here we are creating our own electro-magnet.

Stage 5 have been learning about atoms and compounds this term. We recently attended an excursion at ANSTO to learn about the nuclear reactor and some of the medicinal and industrial applications of the products that are made there.
