International Compost Awareness Day
International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest global education campaign for the composting industry, held annually during May to promote the environmental and agricultural benefits of composting organics and building healthier soils. During Week 3, the Climate Canons shared tips about what you can and can’t compost and the value of worms, fun word searches and colouring in pages with students.
Outdoor Classroom Day
Outdoor Classroom Day is a global movement dedicated to making time outdoors a fundamental part of every student's day. Taking education into nature offers several immediate benefits including improved wellbeing, fresh air, movement to reduce stress and increase engagement. Teachers were encouraged to take their classes outdoors on Monday 18 May and enjoy the sunshine.
Walk Safely to School Day
National Walk Safely to School Day encourages Australian school students to build healthy habits, embrace active transport, and learn critical road safety skills. Across the country, children and their caregivers were urged to leave the car at home and walk the morning commute together. The Climate Canons promoted this event on Friday 22 May and it was great to hear from students who had walked to school this day.
Laudato Si Week
This year’s Laudato Si' Week 2026 invited us to live out the theme "From Hope to Action".
The global celebration marks the anniversary of Pope Francis's landmark encyclical on caring for our common home and invites Catholics worldwide to transform environmental reflection into concrete, daily initiatives. Hope is not passive; it is lived and shared through daily decisions, community life, prayer and concrete acts of care.
You can see our Climate Canons living Pope Francis’ vision in the Catholic Earthcare - Celebrating 10 years of Laudato Si' in Australia video below:
World Bee Day
World Bee Day is an international observance held every year on May 20 to raise awareness about the critical role bees and other pollinators play in global food security and the ecosystem.
The date commemorates the birthday of Anton Janša, the pioneer of modern beekeeping. Bees are among the world’s most important pollinators, supporting biodiversity and the growth of the crops we rely on every day. Despite their importance, bees face severe threats like habitat loss, pesticide use, and parasites. The Climate Canons resident bees took on the challenge of informing our school community of these threats with a lunch time activity.
Thank you to everyone who got involved.
