Becoming Awe Dwellers These School Holidays
As the school holidays approach, many families look forward to a change of pace.
Holidays provide an opportunity to rest, reconnect, and spend quality time together. They also offer something that is becoming increasingly important for both children and adults: time in nature.
Researchers have discovered that experiences of awe can have a powerful impact on wellbeing. Awe is the feeling we experience when we encounter something vast, beautiful, or extraordinary that causes us to pause and take notice. It might be watching a sunset, staring out to the ocean, looking up at a star-filled sky, or strolling through the nearby Dandenong Ranges. These moments help us slow down, reduce stress, increase gratitude, and gain a healthier perspective on life. With many of us living around Mount Dandenong, we don’t have to look far to see God’s creation, with soaring gums, sunrises or misty clouds sitting on nearby hills and mountains.
As Christians, we know that awe is more than simply appreciating nature. Awe points us to the Creator. God's creation reveals His power, creativity, wisdom, and love. Psalm 19:1 reminds us, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands." Every mountain, tree, bird, and sunset is a reminder that we serve a God who is both mighty and personal.
In a world where screens, schedules, and distractions can easily dominate our attention, intentionally spending time in God's creation can be one of the most effective ways to nurture our spiritual, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Studies consistently show that time outdoors can improve mood, reduce anxiety, strengthen family relationships, and increase feelings of happiness and connectedness. For children of all ages, outdoor experiences also foster curiosity, creativity, resilience, and a sense of wonder.
The school holidays provide a wonderful opportunity to become ‘awe dwellers’, people who intentionally look for reasons to marvel and celebrate the natural beauty around us. Rather than rushing from one activity to the next, we can slow down and notice God's fingerprints in the world around us.
This might involve taking a family walk, visiting a local beach or the Yarra Valley, exploring a national park, watching the sunrise, or simply spending time in the backyard stargazing or observing the beauty of creation. These moments do not need to be expensive or elaborate. Often, the most meaningful experiences occur when we create space to stop, notice, and reflect.
As families enjoy a well-earned break, my prayer is that we would take time to be refreshed not only by rest but also by wonder. May we lift our eyes from our devices, our worries, and our busy schedules to see the beauty of God's world. In doing so, may we experience renewed wellbeing, deeper gratitude, and a greater sense of awe for the God who created it all.
