Principal's Update

Dear Parents and Carers,

As we approach the end of a full, productive and very busy Term 2, our school community is looking forward to a well‑earned break. With the holidays just around the corner, I want to thank our students, families and staff for their ongoing support, positivity and commitment throughout the term.

Celebrating Culture and Community

On 27 May, we were delighted to host afternoon tea with our First Nations families as part of our Reconciliation Week celebrations. It was a relaxed and joyful gathering, with several generations coming together to share stories and connection. Throughout the term, students have also viewed a series of videos during homeroom to deepen their understanding of First Nations histories and cultures.

This week, we recognise and celebrate NAIDOC Week, a time to honour the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. On Thursday 18 June, Lowanna College proudly joined with our wider community, including local primary schools, Elders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations and dance groups. Students and staff were welcomed by Aunty Michelle Dow and enjoyed cultural performances by our own Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. A photo booth, cultural activities and a free BBQ lunch made it a memorable celebration for all.

Sporting Success

This term has been exceptional for sporting achievements.

  • Our Year 8 Boys AFL team reached the State Quarter Finals.
  • The Junior Girls AFL team has progressed to the State Finals.
  • The Senior Boys AFL team is also heading to the State Finals.
  • Two of our students, Olivia and Zoe, will compete in the State Cross Country Championships in July.

We are incredibly proud of their dedication, teamwork and resilience.

Arts and Community Connections

On 3 June, our Arts and Music Team hosted the Art Exhibition and Soirée, an evening that showcased the remarkable talent within our school. Students impressed with vocal and instrumental performances, while others displayed their artwork with pride. A particularly touching moment was watching a parent recognise her mother in a portrait created by our LIA students during their visit to Narracan Gardens Residential Aged Care.

Earlier in May, our LIA music students also performed for residents, strengthening intergenerational connections and community spirit.

Student Voice and Learning

The Attitudes to School Survey has now concluded and we look forward to reviewing the full results in Term 3. We appreciate the time that students took to let us know how they feel about school.

Senior Students and the GAT

Our Year 12 students, along with some Year 11s, completed the General Achievement Test (GAT) on Tuesday 16th June. This marks the beginning of their formal assessment period leading into exams in October. The GAT assesses broad knowledge and skills and supports the fairness and quality of VCE assessments. I am sure that students will be happy to have one exam out of the way.

Attendance Matters

As we move into the second half of the year and the weather turns cold, consistent attendance remains essential. Every day of learning counts and we appreciate families working with us to ensure students are present and engaged.

Phones and Air Pods Are Not Permitted

A reminder that mobile phones are not allowed during the school day. This policy helps maintain focus, reduce distractions and support positive social interactions. We ask for your continued support in reinforcing this expectation.

Wishing You a Restful Break

As we head into the holidays, I hope all students take the opportunity to rest, recharge and return refreshed for Term 3. It has been a busy and rewarding term and our students have much to be proud of. Enjoy the break and take care.

Yours sincerely,

Bernadette Cropper
