Learning Japanese Through Play:
Stroke Order with Playdoh
Writing Japanese in the correct stroke order is both an art and an essential skill. It enhances legibility, supports memory, and lays the foundation for beautiful calligraphy. Writing is not simply about drawing shapes — it involves following a logical sequence that reflects the structure and balance of each character.
But how do we introduce these concepts to our young learners in an engaging and meaningful way? The answer: Playdoh!
Our Foundation students have begun their journey into Japanese by learning to read five Hiragana characters. Today, they explored these characters further by tracing them using playdoh. This hands-on activity helped students understand the correct length of each stroke, the order in which strokes are formed, and the direction each stroke should follow.
While many students found the loop-stroke a little challenging, they embraced the task with enthusiasm and curiosity. Most importantly, they thoroughly enjoyed the experience, combining creativity with learning in a fun and memorable way.
