From the Classroom

Grade 2 News
What a busy and exciting term it has been in Grade 2 so far! We have been working incredibly hard across all learning areas, and the students should be very proud of their efforts.
In Reading and Writing, students have been developing their comprehension skills, building fluency, and beginning to produce some fantastic writing pieces. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident writers and taking pride in their work. One of the biggest highlights has been the opportunity for students to visit the principal’s office to share their writing with Heather and Filippa. They always return with beaming smiles, feeling incredibly proud of their achievements and so are we!
In Mathematics, students have been thoroughly enjoying our Maths Groups. They particularly love starting with their fluency tasks before moving into their targeted learning groups. A new and exciting concept for many students has been learning how to check their answers using calculators. Understanding the process of entering numbers, adding or subtracting, and pressing equals has been a real learning experience. Now, calculators have become a class favourite, with students eagerly using them to check their mathematical thinking.
Our weekly construction tasks continue to be a major highlight in the Grade 2 classroom. Students follow challenge cards to build and create using Unifix cubes, shape blocks, and Magnatiles. These tasks encourage problem solving, creativity, perseverance, and teamwork while also supporting important maths and spatial thinking skills.
Our Theme learning has also been a wonderful focus, particularly our learning linked to the zoo excursion. Students have loved connecting classroom learning to real world experiences and extending their knowledge about animals and habitats.
The Grade 2 classroom is always a busy and exciting place to be, and we are learning so much every day. We are incredibly proud of the effort, enthusiasm, and growth our students are showing!
Grade 1/2 Cherry Blossoms
Students learnt about Hanami - a Japanese tradition of enjoying cherry blossoms. Students explored different techniques used for painting - creating a tree trunk with a stick and painting blossoms with Q-tips. Students were asked to think about space when designing and painting their blossom tree, and layering their paint dabs to create texture and depth. Students focused on learning what Hanami means, explaining the importance of cherry blossoms to Japanese culture, and exploring different ways to make marks when painting.
