The Glory of Christmas

When you think of the biblical account of the birth, the arrival of Jesus. We get such a powerful reminder that the Christmas story isn’t about perfect people, is it? It’s about a perfect God, working through ordinary, flawed individuals. Individuals like:

  • Mary, who was overwhelmed by the weight of what God has asked her to do.
  • Joseph, he wrestled with doubt, wondering if he was really up to the task.
  • Shepherds. Wondering if they’re even worthy to be part of something so holy.

And yet, God chose them!

But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.’ Luke 2:10-11

The angel’s first words were: “Do not be afraid.” Fear was everywhere in that moment… Mary feared the unknown, Joseph feared failure, the shepherds feared the glory of heaven breaking through… into their ordinary night. Perhaps, maybe you fear something too?

Failure, rejection, or the thought of not being enough.

But here’s the truth: God doesn’t wait for perfect people.

He works through those who feel inadequate because His strength is made perfect in weakness, Amen?

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 2 Corinthians 12:9

The glory of Christmas is that God came near… not to the powerful or the polished, but to the humble and the broken.

Think about this:

  • God could have announced Jesus’ birth to kings and rulers, but He chose shepherds.
  • He could have picked a wealthy family, but He chose a poor carpenter and a teenage girl.
  • He could have sent His Son into a palace, but He sent Him into a stable instead.

Why? Because God’s glory isn’t about human status, it’s about His presence. When we say “yes” to Him, even in our weakness, His glory shines through us, Amen?

Imagine for a moment… a cracked, clay jar. On its own, it looks broken and useless. But when you place a light inside, the cracks become the very places where the light shines through. That’s what God does with us. Our weaknesses, our fears, our imperfections, they become the openings for His glory to shine.

So let me ask you:

  • Where do you feel inadequate or unworthy right now?
  • How might God be inviting you to trust Him in that area?
  • What would it look like for you to say “yes” to God, even if you feel unprepared?

If He could use a carpenter, a teenage girl, and shepherds… He can use you! Amen?

The question isn’t whether you are qualified… The question is… are you willing?

So this Christmas… don’t just celebrate the story, step into it. Be like Mary and Joseph and the shepherds. Say “yes” to God, even when it’s hard, even when you feel small. Because the glory of Christmas is that God came near, and He still comes near today, in and through people just like you.

I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas, I pray for His presence in your lives and for his continued protection. I thank Him for His goodness and grace and give God all the glory and honour for a wonderful 2025. I look forward to seeing you again in 2026.
