Grade 1 Community News

Hello Grade 1 families,
We’ve had a very exciting few weeks with our aquarium excursions and the completion of our astronomy unit. The Grade 1 team can’t believe we’re already more than halfway through the final term of 2025!
InitiaLit
In Weeks 7 and 8, we have been revisiting our learning throughout the year, including spelling, tricky words, homophones, and writing super sentences. Students have been practising using capital letters, full stops, ensuring their sentences are about someone or something, and that they make sense.
For extra revision and reinforcement at home, you can help your child revise what they have learned; turning present-tense verbs (e.g., walk) into past-tense verbs (walked), orally spell tricky words they come across, and write Super Sentences about their personal experiences at home or at school. You can also scan the QR code provided to revisit the Tricky Words video. Even a little daily practice goes a long way!
Vocabulary and Storybook
In Week 7, we finished reading Wanted! Ralfy Rabbit, Book Burglar. Students explored point of view by asking questions about the characters and practised their creative writing skills by describing their own imaginary rabbits.
In Week 8, we have started reading and discussing How Frogmouth Found Her Home, focusing on predicting, retelling, and writing reports on Australian animals. Practising newly learned vocabulary words and discussing them at home is a great way to support your child’s learning.
Knowledge Building
Alongside our storybooks, in Week 7 we learned about statements, questions, commands and exclamations using the text Looking After Country with Fire. We explored the vocabulary words cleanse and escape while discussing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in relation to caring for Country with Cool Fire.
In Week 8, students will use the four sentence types learned to write a persuasive text about why Cool Burning is important for keeping our forests safe.
Maths
In Week 8, we are learning to predict and compare the mass of objects using an equal-arm balance. You can support this learning at home by comparing the weight of household items and using language such as heavier, lighter and equal.
We will continue sending fluency practice home each week. Please encourage your child to complete one each day. In class, we complete our fluency practice daily using a two-minute timer.
Respectful Relationships
This week in Respectful Relationships, we looked at a range of school scenarios and discussed how everyone can take part in the same activities. Students explored the idea that interests and responsibilities are not limited to gender, and that all people are encouraged to try, learn, and enjoy the things they are interested in, regardless of their gender or preferences.
Reminders and News
Sea Life Excursion
The Grade Ones thoroughly enjoyed their time at Sea Life, exploring marine animals and their habitats. Our students noticed features of the habitats, such as coral that provides shelter for sea creatures or the air pumps that help supply oxygen to the exhibits. Here are some photos from the day.
Sunsmart Reminder
As we continue through Term 4, please remember that all students are required to wear a hat during outdoor play. This helps keep everyone safe and SunSmart while enjoying time outside.
Term 4 Community Engagement Event — The Tarneit Rise Bush Dance!
Join us on 2nd December for a FREE evening of fun with The Billy Tea Bush Band, as students (and parents!) learn some classic Aussie folk dances.
- Bring along a picnic rug and some dinner
- Parents must supervise children throughout.
Please fill out the Expression of Interest form to let us know how many family members will be attending: https://forms.gle/8LUmWaH3ecQypFqr6
Thank you for reading and being an integral part of your child’s learning community!
