Prep Community News

Dear Prep Families,
We are so excited about the growth that all our students have achieved over the past two weeks. Even though we are winding down the year, our preps are still trying their best every day to ensure that every second of their learning counts. Let’s have a look at what we have been focusing on these past two weeks.
Initialit
In our InitiaLit program, we have finished our final lesson and are now focusing on revisiting and revising some of the content we have learnt throughout the year. Each grade has a different focus, but we have all been practicing all our sounds and tricky words, as well as practicing writing and reading sentences. It’s been amazing to see the growth the students have made throughout the year!
Storybook
This fortnight, we enjoyed reading “Click Clack Moo” by Doreen Cronin, illustrated by Betsy Lewin. Our target vocabulary includes the words “impatient,” “furious,” and “demand.”
During our storybook sessions, students have the opportunity to predict the story and engage in discussions about the text based on its cover and illustrations. You can support your child at home by asking them questions about the story and encouraging them to define the new words or use them in sentences.
Writing
In writing, we have been delving into imaginative texts that entertain and engage readers. This fortnight, we have been reading about "The Three Billy Goats," exploring its beginning, middle, and end. An excellent way to assist your child at home is by encouraging them to retell the story’s structure and express it in sentences. Please remind your child to ensure they strive for 5-star writing!
Maths
In Maths, we have had a big week of assessments. Students have been striving for success and demonstrating how much they have learnt throughout the year. We are incredibly proud of our students and how hard they have worked this year. However, the learning is not complete yet. This week, we have also been revisiting number bonds, this time finding the missing number using the subtraction strategy. Students have also begun practicing interpreting graphs by discussing which has ‘more’ or ‘less’ either through counting or subitising.
Health
In Health, we have been focusing on foods and activities that will keep us healthy. Students have been discussing ‘all the time’ and ‘sometimes’ foods. Please encourage your children to eat healthy food by involving them in making their lunch each day. Speak to them about what foods are going to keep their bodies strong and healthy.
Reminders
As the weather warms up this term, please ensure to send your child to school with a labelled hat. This supports our SunSmart policy and helps us protect students while they enjoy outdoor activities.
Swimming
We want to remind everyone that in Week 9, the final prep classes will attend swimming. Please ensure you have labelled all your child’s items with their names and that they have an appropriate bag to store their wet clothes after swimming.
Take Home Readers
Reading at home is essential for our students’ development. Please encourage nightly reading and kindly ask that students return their book bags on assigned days, for classroom teachers to check reading journals and provide new books.
We are extremely proud of the hard work and confidence our students have shown this term. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to witnessing further growth as our preps prepare for Grade 1 next year!
Warm regards,
PLC Prep
