Visual Arts News

Grade Prep
As our preps near the end of their first year with us in Visual Arts we can really see the improvement in their motor skills. Something that is so important for students to practice is using scissors. This artwork has really helped them to see their growth in their ability to cut out shapes without too much assistance. Using Wassily Kandinsky as inspiration students learnt about layering paper to create colourful trees. Well done on such amazing growth preps!
Grade One
The grade 1 students are practicing their collaging skills in a really fun way this week by creating sky high ice cream cones, Yum!
This is helping students with their motor skills in using scissors to cut each piece and glue them together to create their ice creams. Students will also be able to show their creativity in how they decorate their ice cream cones and the wonderful imaginative flavours they come up with. Great work!
Grade Two
Using inspiration from a book we recently read, Under the Love Umbrella, students have created their own umbrella, showcasing their loved ones underneath. The story reminds us that even when we can’t see our loved ones they are always with us. Students really loved sharing with each other who is under their love umbrella and why they were important to them. It has been so great to be able to share and connect over the last two weeks with this project. Great work!
Grade Three
Our Grade 3 students have been putting their skills to the test with their project over the last week. Learning about symmetry and using their knowledge of blending to create beautiful butterfly’s. This week we talk about mosaic and deconstruct half of our butterflies to put them back together! We are looking forward to seeing the final results.
Grade Four
Grade 4 students worked collaboratively this week to create a James Rizzi inspired artwork. Each student created a hot air balloon which they then collaged onto a combined background to create a beautiful skyline of creative, colourful hot air balloons. It has been so nice to have these displayed in our art rooms. Thank you grade 4.
Grade Five
The last fortnight has seen our grade 5 students revisit an artist we learnt about earlier in the year, Yayoi Kusama. Using her patterns and artwork as inspiration, the students drew a glass or vase sitting on the table and coloured in their artwork using a complimentary colour pair and varying patterns. These busy pieces really showcased their creativity and turned out fantastic, well done!
Grade Six
Our grade 6 students have finalised their Media Art units with a movie premiere, showing their classmates their ability to use different camera angles and sound to share a message with their audience. They did such a great job!
With the Media Arts unit complete we now move back into Visual Arts with a self portrait project. This project requires our students to really think about their features and how they can represent these in the style of Tim Burton. This project is continuing to develop their shading and blending techniques. It can be challenging to remain true to yourself in another artist style, but the students are all doing a really great job.
