Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,
It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 8 of Term 4! As the year draws to a close, students continue to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment across all areas of learning. Knowledge Building
We continue reading our class novel ‘The Last Bear’ and build our knowledge of the Arctic, climate change, and how this affects the Arctic animals. Students have been interacting with the text by discussing the text during pause points. Students are asked to think about the words the author has written, why they have written it this way, and what they are trying to tell us.
Students have continued to practise their oral reading fluency by practising the same passage each day. From this text, students pick up vocabulary, background knowledge - all whilst practising how to become accurate and fluent readers who pay attention to punctuation and phrasing.
During Writing Fluency, we have been learning how to edit and revise our writing. Students have been using picture prompts to generate their ideas. 5 minutes have been allocated for them to write as much as they can on the topic, 5 minutes to edit their writing using a checklist, and 5 minutes to revise their writing.
For genre writing, we have been focusing on Persuasive Writing. Students have been writing a persuasive letter on Polar Bear Protection. We continue to work on becoming masters of complex sentences and are looking at how powerful it can be to change the position of a dependent and an independent clause.
Mathematics
Our next unit focus will be Operations. In this 12-lesson unit, students work with mathematical operations and problem-solving strategies. They have learned a range of strategies for performing calculations and solving problems in previous units. The focus of this unit is to further develop students’ understanding of the effects of adjustments within calculations and using mathematical representations to assist in solving problems.
Vocabulary
Over the past two weeks, the students have been learning new words each week from the novel and fluency reading passages. Students look at the meaning of the words, part of speech, how to use the words in sentences, word associations and affixes. They then use these words when writing and speaking.
