Grade 4 Community News

Dear Grade 4 families,

Week 8 of Term 4 has arrived so quickly! As we approach the end of the year, students remain engaged, motivated, and eager to learn. Our classrooms are filled with exciting projects, thoughtful reflections, and moments that highlight just how much growth has taken place. We are truly proud of every student - their academic achievements, social development, and emotional growth - and it’s a joy to see their confidence and collaboration continue to flourish.

Reading

Students have been using their Read to Learn lessons to dive into the fascinating world of Medieval Europe. Through guided reading, discussion, and note-taking, they have been building skills to understand complex historical ideas while also growing as independent readers. They learned about the Magna Carta and why it is still considered an important step toward the rights and freedoms many countries value today. The classes were also captivated by the inspiring story of Joan of Arc and the dramatic impact of The Black Death on Europe’s population and daily life. These lessons have helped students practise identifying main ideas, making inferences, and summarising information—all essential skills for strong, confident readers. Ask your child what surprised them most about life in the Middle Ages! In Week 8, students began their unit on Poetry. Here, they have explored different styles of poems, such as ‘I Am’ poems and ‘Free Verse’ poems, discussing the different structure and language features used.

Writing

Our Read to Learn sessions on Medieval Europe have supported students in developing strong historical recounts. This background knowledge has helped them write clearer, more detailed recounts, using accurate historical information and stronger vocabulary. In Week 8, students created the different kinds of poems that they learned about in Reading. They started off the week with writing an ‘I Am’ poem, which is a structured, personal styled poem where the writer describes themselves using a series of prompts. They then moved onto creating a ‘Free Verse’ poem, which is a poem with no structure or rules - students enjoyed the creativity in writing these!

Maths

In Mathematics, students completed a short one-week unit on Mass and Capacity. Throughout this unit, students engaged in hands-on learning experiences that required them to use analog scales to measure the mass of a range of classroom items. They also discussed and selected appropriate units of measurement when recording the mass of different objects, such as grams or kilograms, and justified the reason for their choices. Students also measured the capacity of different containers using jugs and other tools, recording their findings in millilitres and litres. In Week 8, students started their final mathematics unit for the year on Multiplication and Division. They explored a range of strategies to solve division equations, such as using arrays and short division, both with and without regrouping. Students finished off the week with a rich task, where they could apply their knowledge of solving division equations in a problem-solving context.
