Grade 3 Community News

Hello Grade 3 Student Families,

We’ve had a fantastic couple of weeks in Grade 3, filled with rich discussions, thoughtful writing, and hands-on learning! Here’s a look at what we’ve been working on across the curriculum.

📚 Reading

Students have enjoyed continuing to explore Finding Our Heart, diving deeper into themes of belonging, truth-telling, culture, and identity. We have also started reading Tupaia, Issac & Cook by Mark Wilson, where students take in different perspectives as Captain Cook guides the Endeavour through the Pacific Ocean. Students been practising their stop and jot skills as they take key notes as they read and we have been supporting students in answering questions to support their comprehension as they read. We’ve loved seeing the meaningful conversations these texts have sparked in classrooms.

✏️ Writing

In Writing, students have been crafting thoughtful and personalised Book Reports and Personal Opinions. Students have been learning to express what the text is about, its themes and key messages and then share their own ideas and thoughts about the text with reasons and their opinions, recommendations.

Across Weeks 7 and 8, our grammar focus included:

  • using common collective nouns, (a cloud of dust, a pack of cards, a swarm of bees) and
  • correctly applying commas to separate items in a list. (Sarah bought some apples, bananas, pears and mangos for the fruit salad).

➗ Maths

Week 7 saw us continue our unit on Multiplication and Division exploring think boards with students showing examples of multiplication and division problems by using equal groups, arrays, repeated addition, and beginning to build fluency with times tables. Students enjoyed hands-on activities and real-world problem-solving that strengthened their number sense.

In Week 8, we shifted into Mass and Capacity by reading measurements, measuring and comparing, estimating and rich hands-on learning tasks. You can support your child's learning by getting them to support you with some mass and capacity learning at home such as involving them in some cooking preparation with units of measurement at home with millilitres, litres, grams and kilograms.

🗣️ Vocabulary

Each week, students have engaged with rich new vocabulary from our text Finding Our Heart to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language.

Week 7 words: revive, acknowledge, ignored, protested, united, destinyWeek 8 words: sacred, negotiation, attempt, imitating, frustration, retreating

Students practised using these words in sentences, discussions, and class activities to expand their understanding and confidence.

Thank you for all your support throughout the year. Packing healthy snacks and lunch boxes, making sure your child comes to school in the correct uniform, and helping them with learning routines like remembering their reading nights. We are so proud of how much our Grade 3 students have grown in 2025. It really is a team effort! Please remember to keep labelling your child’s clothing so any lost items can be returned quickly. Teachers can support with this if a student lets them know their hat or coat needs their name written on it.

Thank you!
