Chess Club Report

The school’s Chess Club continues to be a popular and valuable lunchtime activity for students across all year groups. Held every Monday in Room C213, the club is a free opportunity for students to engage in a challenging and enjoyable pursuit.

Organised and run by Mathematics teacher Mr James Buchanan, the club attracts a diverse group of participants from Year 7 to Year 12. Students of all ability levels are encouraged to attend, from those with significant experience in competitive play to beginners who are learning the game for the first time.

The club provides a supportive environment where students can develop important cognitive skills. Regular participation in chess has been shown to strengthen problem-solving abilities, logical reasoning, and strategic thinking. Students are required to analyse positions, anticipate their opponent’s moves, and plan ahead, all of which contribute to improved critical thinking skills that are transferable to other areas of learning.

In addition to its academic benefits, the Chess Club fosters positive social interaction, allowing students to connect with peers across different year levels in a relaxed and inclusive setting. The presence of both experienced players and newcomers helps to create a collaborative atmosphere, where students can learn from one another and build confidence.

Overall, the Chess Club remains a well-attended and enriching activity within the school, supporting both intellectual development and student engagement.

Year 12 Essential Mathematics – Externally Set Task

Last week, all Year 12 Essential Mathematics students completed the Externally Set Task (EST), an important component of their course assessment. This task is undertaken by students across the entire state, providing a consistent and standardized measure of learning.

The Externally Set Task allows students to demonstrate their understanding of key mathematical concepts and their ability to apply these skills in practical contexts. It is a valuable part of the overall assessment program and helps ensure fairness and comparability across schools.

Our students approached the task with focus and determination, reflecting their preparation throughout the year.
