Dear Applecross SHS Families

High expectations for Student Behaviour

As we move through Term 2, I would like to thank families for their ongoing support in maintaining the positive culture we value at Applecross. We have high expectations for student behaviour, and these expectations help create a learning environment that is safe, respectful and inclusive for all students.

Recently, we have noticed an increase in some behaviours that do not align with our school expectations. These matters have been addressed with students during year group assemblies this week, and staff have also been reminded of the importance of consistency and vigilance to ensure expectations remain clear and fair for all students.

We ask families to continue supporting the school with the following:

  • Mobile phones are to remain “off and away all day”. This expectation begins as soon as students enter the school grounds each morning. If a student is seen using their phone, staff will ask them to hand it in, and it will be taken to Student Services for collection. Refusal to comply with this request may result in more serious consequences.

  • We have noticed an increase in the number of students remaining on school grounds after the final bell without participating in a supervised after-school activity, club, or lesson. Some students have also been engaging in unsafe behaviour involving bikes and scooters. We would appreciate family support in encouraging students to leave the school grounds safely and promptly at the end of the school day unless they are participating in an organised activity.

  • We are pleased with how students are adjusting to the cooler weather and appreciate family support in maintaining high standards of uniform presentation. Hoodies are not part of the school uniform and should not be worn. We also ask families to ensure student skirts are of an appropriate and respectful length.

  • We have also noticed an increase in students chewing gum during the school day. We ask families to support the school by discouraging students from bringing chewing gum to school, as it can create hygiene and cleanliness issues across the school.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) has reconvened its Uniform Taskforce and is currently exploring alternative skirt options to improve comfort and fit. We are hopeful this work will support students in wearing the school uniform with pride and reduce the wearing of non-uniform items.

P&C Day – You are the best!

P&C Day will be celebrated on Friday, 22 May. This day provides an opportunity for schools to recognise and celebrate the dedication, time and support provided to the school by the P&C and its sub-committees, Visual Arts, Music and Tennis.

Further in this newsletter, you will find a special acknowledgement highlighting the valuable contributions of our P&C. Our school social media platforms will also feature a student-created video and infographic showcasing the many ways the P&C has supported school improvement initiatives and enriched the student experience.

On behalf of our school community, thank you to all members of the P&C for your ongoing commitment and service. Schools are stronger when families and schools work together, and we know that consistent family engagement in learning positively impacts student achievement and well-being.

I look forward to continuing to work closely with the P&C in the years ahead, supporting their important work and strengthening the partnership between home and school.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

This week we celebrated Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea. This important annual event raises both funds and awareness for those affected by cancer and reflects the strong sense of care and community within our school.

The event also provided an opportunity for staff to come together, connect and support one another, reinforcing the importance of wellbeing and community spirit in our school environment.

I am sure many of you also participated in similar events in your workplaces or took time this week to donate, support research, and reflect on the lives of those who have fought cancer and those who continue to inspire through their strength and survival, and those who are remembered with great love and lasting memories.
