Year 12 Media Excursion - Top Design Exhibition

On Tuesday the 28th of April, the year 12 Media class was granted a fantastic opportunity to embark on excursion to the Top Design exhibitions at Melbourne Museum and to ACMI  at Federation Square. Within this journey, we were able to experience viewing multiple other media-projects produced across Victorian schools, such as short films, music videos and print pieces like comics, whilst also being given the chance to tour through the historical universe of motion picture, Australian TV and film at ACMI.

We are in the process of developing our SATs, and this day gave us countless thoughts into the many potentials of how we can go above and beyond with our projects, investing more into the creativity of how to produce an amazing, engaging media productions.

Environmental Science Students Explore Sustainability Careers

On World Environment Day, our Year 10, 11 and 12 Environmental Science students attended the Environmental Science Careers Fair at Melbourne Museum, where they explored the many career pathways available in sustainability.

Students heard from a range of professionals, including environmental lawyers, museum curators and live animal presenters, who shared their career journeys and advice for pursuing a future in environmental science. They then explored the immersive Our Wondrous Planet exhibition, where they took part in a scavenger hunt-style activity, meeting and speaking with professionals stationed throughout the gallery. Students chatted with wildlife photographers, researchers, environmental lawyers, fieldwork assistants, evolution specialists and many others, gaining firsthand insight into the wide variety of careers in environmental science while learning about biodiversity, interconnected ecosystems and First Peoples' perspectives.

"The Environmental Science Careers Excursion was an incredibly fun experience. We were able to learn about different environmental careers and what pathways are needed for them. I loved exploring the museum and the different exhibitions as they were fascinating and showed how different ecological systems worked in an engaging way. We also had the opportunity to talk to people working in environmental science-related careers and gain much more insight into what those careers were and what they did."

German City Excursion

Talk about an unforgettable experience. The city trip for my year 9 German class was amazing and rewarding.

Imagine being taken back to a 90’s cinema- that is what it felt like with the vintage décor and warm lighting of ‘Das Kino’ (the cinema). We ordered our delicious snacks and watched the German movie, The Secret Floor as a way of participating in the 2026 German Film Festival. Not only did the film help us in our aural German but also improved our knowledge on German culture, history and taught us some fun phrases like, ‘es tut mir leid’ or ‘Welches Jahr ist es?’. The movie was spectacular but by then all we could think about was food, food, food!

The Hofbräuhaus could only be described as warm as it seemed to diminish the rush of the city as we all sat together and ate our delicious schnitzels and rich chocolate cake. Es war sehr lecker! Going to the restaurant gave us an excellent chance to practice our unit on ordering and talking to the waiters in German. The staff was so sweet and freundlich which only added to the fun.

As if we were part of some secret society, at the restaurant we received a letter written by the Monash University German Club, GLASS. Their teacher had come to visit our class the week before for an incursion and that just added to the excitement.

The trip was a great way to spend the day, and it allowed us to spend some time using German in more natural situations and learn more about German culture and history.

Year 12 Japanese – Follow Your Waste Excursion

This term, the year 12 Japanese class went on a special ‘Follow Your Waste’ excursion. During the excursion, we visited Valoriza - a food and garden waste management centre that recycles the waste from our kitchens and gardens into usable material. We also got to visit Upparel, a first-of-its kind textiles recycling facility, VEOLIA to learn about where our general waste goes and how it’s managed, and Stevenson’s Road closed landfill for in-depth information about the work that goes into reclaiming the land after a landfill is filled to capacity and closed.

Our class was also lucky enough to experience a Recycle Right information session at Cleanaway Recycling Education Centre. Here, we found out just how crucial it is to ensure that we place the right items in the right bin and learned about common misconceptions most people hold about items that are and aren’t recyclable.

In all, the day was incredibly insightful, and we all walked away from it with newfound knowledge and understanding of how we manage waste locally. It was a very valuable experience that we’d like to thank Mrs Scouller and the City of Casey Council for, as we wouldn’t have been able to go on such an interesting excursion without their help in organising the event for us.

Angelica Le, 12F

The excursion was very eye-opening and educational and we were all able to learn lots of things about how our city is managing waste. Personally, my favourite part was visiting Upparel in Cranbourne, which collects various textiles in good condition. They upcycle it into new materials that are very cool, with the environment in consideration throughout the process.

Reyan David, 12B

The excursion I participated in was informative and helpful in giving me insight towards the future upcoming topics in our Japanese SACs and exams, as well as being an amazing experience when it comes to learning about the Casey community's waste management and recycling processes. The most helpful thing for daily life in the community that came from the trip was the information session regarding what was recyclable and what was not recyclable. This is because beforehand, my preconception regarding recycling was that any hard plastics would be able to be recycled but now after the session, I'm able to properly recycle plastics and benefit the community.

Dominic Koy, 12E

The Japanese ‘Follow Your Waste’ excursion gave us a unique opportunity to learn more about recycling processes in Victoria, helping us to not only prepare for our oral exam at the end of the year but also to become more aware of how waste can be sustainably recycled and repurposed rather than going to landfill. The highlight for me was probably Upparel, as it was shocking to see just how much clothing is getting thrown away and interesting to hear about how they reused the fibres for things like furniture and insulation.

This excursion provided context for students about recycling processes in our area in preparation for their final Area of Study in Japanese on the topic of environment and sustainability. In this Area of Study students conduct a comparison between recycling and waste management practices in our area with Japan in language.

Year 8 Crime Stoppers Incursion

Over Week 9 of Term 2, all 20 of our Year 8 home groups participated in a series of presentations delivered by Crime Stoppers Victoria. The sessions were engaging and highly relevant to the experiences of young people at our school. The Crime Stoppers presenters connected with our students, encouraging participation, and delivering important messages in an age-appropriate manner.

The program provided valuable opportunities for students to develop their understanding of staying safe, responsible decision-making, and the role they can play in contributing to safer communities. Feedback from both students and staff was very positive, with students engaged throughout the sessions.
