Library News

Library News – Semester 1
The library has enjoyed a fantastic start to the school year, welcoming many new students and seeing borrowing figures continue to grow. Our digital collection has also proven increasingly popular, with students embracing the convenience of eBooks and audiobooks. To date, an impressive 1,317 digital titles have been borrowed this year.
Premier’s Reading Challenge
Speaking of reading, we are delighted to be running the Premier’s Reading Challenge for the second consecutive year. So far, students have read an outstanding 874 books as part of the challenge.
There is still plenty of time to get involved. Simply visit the library to collect your sign-in code and start reading. Participants need to read just 15 books by 3 September to complete the challenge. Every book counts, and every page is a step towards success.
Book Club & Shadow Judging Competition
Our Book Club continues to thrive, with more students joining than ever before to share their love of reading. Fortnightly meetings have been filled with lively discussion, recommendations and a genuine appreciation of great books.
The biggest news for Terms 2 and 3 is that Kambrya College was selected to participate in the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Children’s Book of the Year Awards Shadow Judging Program. This prestigious initiative allows students to step into the role of literary judges by reading all six shortlisted titles in the Older Readers category and casting their vote for the book they believe deserves to win.
As Shadow Judges, students are representing Kambrya College and contributing their voice to a nationally recognised reading program. All participants will receive a certificate in recognition of their involvement.
MakerSpace & CraftSpace
Creativity has been flourishing during our fortnightly lunchtime MakerSpace and CraftSpace sessions. Students have enthusiastically participated in a range of “make-and-take” activities, including flower crafts, holographic bookmarks, International Women’s Day cards, animal rock painting, Easter decorations, Mother’s Day gifts and cards, keyrings, scratch-art creations and decorative tote bags.
The library has certainly been buzzing with imagination, colour and creativity.
Easter Celebrations
Our annual Easter Egg Hunt was once again a highlight of the semester. Students eagerly lined up for their chance to spend ten action-packed seconds searching through the library stacks for hidden Easter eggs and glow-in-the-dark bunnies. The energy was remarkable—imagine the Boxing Day sales, but with more books and significantly more chocolate!
This year also saw the introduction of a new competition: the Bunny in the Stacks Photo Challenge. Each morning, a clue was posted on Compass to help students track down the library’s elusive bunny. The first student to locate it each day won an Easter egg prize.
The challenge proved so popular that staff members wanted to join the fun, leading to the creation of a special Staff Bunny Photo Challenge as well.
ANZAC Day Commemoration
Thank you to all students who contributed to our collaborative ANZAC Day mural displayed in the library foyer. The completed artwork was both striking and meaningful, serving as a respectful tribute to the service and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand soldiers. It was wonderful to see our school community come together to honour this important occasion.
Star Wars Day
The Force was certainly strong in the library on May the Fourth. Students enjoyed lightsaber challenges, Star Wars-themed Kahoot quizzes and friendly competition to determine who possessed the greatest Jedi knowledge. The event was a galaxy-sized success and a fantastic way to celebrate one of popular culture’s most beloved franchises.
FIFA Club World Cup Fever
Football fever has arrived at Kambrya College, with students and staff gathering in the library to follow the progress of the FIFA Club World Cup. Our tournament fixture wall has become a popular meeting point as everyone tracks results and predicts who will advance through each round.
Live matches have been screened during recess and lunchtime, and the cheers from enthusiastic supporters have often echoed across the courtyard. The excitement is building as the competition progresses, and we look forward to seeing who will lift the trophy.
End of Term break
As Semester 1 comes to a close, the school holidays are now upon us. We wish all students, staff and families a safe, restful and well-deserved break. We hope you find time to relax, recharge and perhaps get lost in a great book or two. Whether you're travelling, spending time with family and friends, or simply enjoying some quiet time at home, remember that reading is the perfect holiday companion. Happy reading, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the library next semester!
