From the Classroom

 Junior Unit Tells All

This week we had a fabulous excursion to Puffing Billy Railway on Tuesday! Students enjoyed learning all about steam trains and discovered that Puffing Billy is now 125 years old. It was a wonderful hands-on learning experience, and the children loved exploring the history and excitement of the railway.

Junior A

In Mathematics, Junior A students have been learning how to count on and jump from one more and one less using frogs. The children have loved this play-based approach and have enjoyed learning the new language around maths in a fun and engaging way.

In English, Junior A have been reading The Book With No Pictures. Through this text, students have been learning about imagery, symbolism, and connotation, while exploring how nonsense words can have different meanings depending on the way we say them.

Junior B

Junior B students have also been focusing on a unit exploring imagery, symbolism, and connotation while reading Spoons. In Mathematics, students have been developing their understanding of addition and subtraction through a range of engaging activities and learning experiences.

Middle Unit News

In English, Middle B will continue reading Coral Sea Dreaming, a beautiful picture book that explores the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef through rich language and illustrations. We discuss the key themes in the story, including caring for the environment, the beauty of nature, and the importance of protecting our oceans.

Students have begun planning and writing their own persuasive texts. They are learning how to express an opinion clearly, support their ideas with reasons and examples, and use persuasive language to convince their audience.

Middle A are close to finishing off their persuasive unit on the text Koala Ark. We have been busy researching threats to koalas through detailed audio episodes. From their research we have begun planning a persuasive text which will be presented as a newsletter article on why we must save the koalas. With a point of view and supporting evidence, Middle A have begun to plan, draft and later this week start to type their final text.

In Maths, the Middle unit will be focusing on subtraction, building confidence and accuracy with a range of strategies. Students will practise solving subtraction problems using mental strategies, partitioning numbers, place value understanding, and written methods. Students will develop efficient ways to subtract two- and three-digit numbers and will extend their skills to solve more complex problems involving larger numbers, regrouping, and real-life worded problems. We will also be encouraging students to explain their thinking and choose strategies that work best for them, helping to build strong number sense and mathematical reasoning.

You can support your child at home by practising subtraction facts, using everyday examples such as shopping or measuring, and asking them to explain how they solved a problem.
